Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion 1993
Village springs up as campers arrive
Each year during the first week of
September another little village springs up
within Blyth as trailers arrive at the
fairgrounds for the annual Huron Pioneer
Thresher and Hobby Association Reunion.
Over the years the "Tented city" has had
over 450 campers moving in, meaning a
great deal of work for the camping
committee. For the past several years Joe
Hallahan assisted this year by Chris
Courtney, who is looking after pre-
registration and the many volunteers logged
literally hundreds of hours to prepare the
grounds.
It seems that every aspect of the Reunion
thrives as the numbers of participants
increase and the campers are no exception. It
has over the years become, for at least one
full week a full-time job in itself and has
over the years often outgrown itself.
Some years ago the Association
recognized a need for greater and better
camping facilities. An area to the west side
of the fairgrounds had been purchased some
years ago by the village with the intention of
increasing the parking space. However,
Property Chairman Carman Craig says the
need for camping space was evident so the
six acres was developed for that purpose.
Then last year close to 24 acres to the
west of the developed area was purchased by
the village, with 2/3 comings from the
Threshers and 1/3 grant assistance from the
Ministry of Tourism and Recreation. This
was to create a road allowance from the
grounds down to County Road 25. Though
the roadway will be part of a future
development project, last spring some of the
land was developed to provide space for
another 200 campers.
Total camping now is 500-600 lots, 300
of which are serviced. Other developments
are planned for the remainder of the
property, though they depend on funds, Mr.
Craig says.
Will the Reunion ever get to the point
where there is not enough land to
accommodate it? Mr. Craig says he
anticipates steady growth, but says as long
as you can justify the purchase price there is
always land available. "Our customer is over
55 because it's nostalgia we're selling. As
long as we can keep them entertained it will
continue to grow."
