Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion 1993
Feeding the multitudes
The Blyth Fire Department will be providing an early morning breakfast on Saturday and Sunday at the Fire Hall. For
the early riser, breakfast will be served beginning at 7:30 a.m. and running until 11:00 a.m.
Volunteers
serve beans
As you walk the Blyth Fairgrounds
during the 32nd annual Huron Pioneer
Thresher Reunion you may from time to
time smell the delicious aroma of baked
beans, courtesy of the Friends of the Huron
County Museum and curator Ray
Scotchmer, who has been a part of the event
for well over a decade.
Though the Thresher Reunion initially
contributed time and effort, Mr. Scotchmer
says they have become so busy that they
couldn't continue. If it wasn't for the Friends,
who volunteer to assist with the serving, the
work perhaps couldn't continue.
And volunteer work it certainly takes.
Each of the days of the Reunion four to six
volunteers help to cook the big pot of beans.
A total of 200 pounds of white beans goes
into the pot over the three days. In addition
to the beans, 95 pounds of pork hocks will
be used, 18 spanish onions, three cans of

could be the answer. The beans arc started
early in the morning in a large cast iron pot.
They simmer over an open fire throughout
the day. As portions are taken out to feed the
crowds more beans are added to the brew.
This is a typical thresher's soup.
For those looking for a sit down meal, the
Legion Auxiliary ladies will be providing a
hot meal in the upstairs of the Auditorium.
Lunch will be available Friday and Saturday
from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and dinner will
be served beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Lunch will consist of soup and a sandwich
while at dinner there will be a choice of
beef, ham, chicken and sausage with all the
Several years ago the Thresher
Association and the village bought more
land so there would be more available on
site parking for visitors to the annual
Reunion.
However, the Reunion just kept on
growing and another solution had to be
trimmings. Mrs. Amens of the Ladies
Auxiliary says there will be a good selection
of desserts to choose from as well, such as
pies, cakes and cheesecakes.
On Sunday, the hot meals will be supplied
by the Blyth Lions. Roast beef will be served
for dinner from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. and a
light lunch of soup and sandwiches will be
available at noon.
The Lions will also be running the beer
tent in Lions Park on Saturday and Sunday.
For early risers, the Blyth Fire Department
pancake breakfast will be served from 7:30
a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the firehall. This will
be available on Saturday and Sunday .

found.
Today visitors can avoid traffic tie-ups by
parking at a special lot at the east end of the
village on County Road 25. Shuttle buses
then transport you to the fairground's main
gate from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and
Sunday.
Parking at the lot is free.
