Theatre review Glorious end to Blyth season Happy 55th Anniversary NORMAN & MARY COULTES SEPTEMBER 2, 1938 -1993 Love from your family By Bonnie Gropp Raymond Storey's The Glorious 12th made its impressive return to Blyth Festival on Friday evening. It was my pleasure last year to see this production at Blyth and though the second time around was not as bewitching as the first, I was still suitably pleased with what I saw. The 1993 production sports much the same look with some new cos- tumes adding a bit of colour. These and the convictions of the play- wright/ director, who obviously has a clear picture of the way he wants his story told, have kept the pro- duction from becoming stale. Some different faces in the cast add freshness as well. Though most of the players remain the same, the faces have changed on three. Kevin Bundy, a versatile actor, who moves from role to role with a chameleon-like adaptability is this year's Dalziel, replacing Patric Masurkevitch. John Wright, who portrays Morgan (Dwight McFee had the role last season) is a charm- ing rogue and Hullett Twp. native Brent Thomas, as the young Colm, is a treasure of a find. The returnees, Wally McSween, Julie Bond, Marianne Copithome, Patricia Vanstone, Jerry Franken and Laurel Paetz provide the same rich flavour, under a new icing. In this day of political correct- ness Mr. Storey's tale of an Orange family in 1927 Ontario is a coura- geous piece. Clearly there will be some who fain shock at the remarks of bigotry. However, the tale is not one telling us that this is the way things should be, it is reminding us that, wrong or not, this is the way it was. Mr. Storey knows of what he speaks. His story of a family's struggles to maintain what they believe in, in a changing world was based on his relationship with his grandfather, a conservative Orange- man who taught him values, hon- esty and fairness. In his notes he says, "It was patriotic, community boosting, encouragingly Christian (at least Protestant) and in their minds and hearts, exemplified all that was worth fighting for..." The grandfather (McSween) in The Glorious 12th also comes to face the changing ideas on Orangeism that his son, Dalziel harbours. Having grown up with long-nurtured convictions which became more difficult to define as the world changed, he is often puz- zled by Dalziel's comments. The conflict continues with the stories of Dalziel's sister — Prue (Vanstone) who detests what her husband (Franken) stands for and Grace (Bond), whose friendship with an Indian man ended tragical- ly. The influence of KKK members Prue (Paetz) and Morgan demon- The Blyth Festival is having another kind of premier on Saturday, Sept. 11. Canadian artist Mark Fletcher will be on hand at 4 p.m. to sign 300 limited edition reproductions of his painting "Door Left Standing", the original artwork for the 1993 Blyth Festival season poster and brochure. Mark has worked with the Blyth Festival over a number of years, and in 1988 his painting "Chairs at the Family Picnic" was chosen for what became over the years one of Blyth's most admired posters. "Door Left Standing" has appeared on over 100,000 Blyth Buck& Doe for LISA PARKER and ANDREW HENRY FRIDAY SEPT. 3 at Brussels Arena Tickets call 887-6291 or 887-9107 strates a frightening fanaticism. Caught in the crossfire are the young, tender Colm and the earthy Meggie (Copithorne). Mr. Storey has written a piece in a non-judgmental way, that shows there are two sides to every story. It is about real people with real strug- gles; about taking a stand and standing together. It is a look at a time that shaped differing opinions and forced people to question some of the things they had taken for granted. Though the second time around lagged in places for me, it is an excellent conclusion to an excellent season. Following the closing on Sept. 11, The Glorious 12th, a worthy ambasssador for Blyth Fes- tival, will be touring. Festival brochures and 3,000 Festival posters throughout Ontario and Canada. The reproduction carries a $50 price tag and will only be available in a limited run of 300 signed copies. The original of "Door Left Standing" will be on display and a short reception will follow. The public is invited to attend the signing; some of the reproductions will be on sale.
