Brussels youth returns from trip to Germany
By Janice Becker
A Brussels student has recently
returned from a three week visit to
Germany.
Curtis Graber, son of Betty
Graber of Brussels, took part in the
Lions and Leo sponsored exchange
program, departing for Hanau, Ger-
many on July 24.
Hanau is located in central Ger-
many, near Frankfurt.
Of his tours around Frankfurt and
area, Curtis says they were not
always interesting. "We spent a lot
of time discussing economic policy
and touring the banks and federal
reserves," he says, adding that Ger-
mans are very proud of their eco-
nomic infrastructure.
Some of the local tours Curtis
found more interesting were the old
castles.
Curtis stayed with a host family
who was also housing a boy from
Norway. Within a one block radius
of his home there were 10 other
exchange students, he says. In
total, 36 kids from around the
world were visiting Germany.
The boys toured The Rosso Bian-
co Collection, a car museum for
over 200 very expensive vehicles,
says Curtis. All the cars were
owned by one man and consisted of
exhibits such as a Ferrari and
Porsche.
During the last week of his stay,
Curtis travelled to a camp held for
all the exchange students.
"Because of the social aspect, this
was the best part of the trip," he
says.
While at the camp, the group
took a 20 mile bike tour and visited
composer J. S. Bach's house. "The
house tour was very interesting,"
says Curtis.
Curtis says he found that the Ger-
man people "loved Canadians to
pieces". He says, "Once they found
out where I was from, they shook
my hand vigorously."
He was asked many questions
about Canada. The one thing that
surprised the German youth was
the fact there is no conscription in
Canada and that women are in the
Armed Forces.
Curtis also had a small problem
during his travel. His flight home
was overbooked and he had to
spend 30 hours at the Frankfurt ad-
port.
The extra time may not have
been so bad except for the fact that
his luggage and money had already
arrived in Toronto, on the over-
booked flight, he says.
After four trips to the complaints
department and a call from his
mother who was looking for him in
Toronto, Curtis's travel agent
arranged for a room in a nearby
hotel.
After some food (on the travel
agency) and a short nap, he says he
was contacted at 5 a.m. by the air-
port staff, to come to register for
the next flight out.
Curtis said he returned to the air-
port quickly, hoping the flight
would be soon. After registering,
Curtis says he was told the flight
was not until 4 p.m.
He says, "That would have been
fine except I had already checked
out of my room. I spent another 11
hours watching people."
Even with the delay in the flight
home, Curtis says the trip was
"really good". "I recommend the
program to other students interested
in travelling."
