Brussels Livestock report 1160 stockers on offer, selling from $91.75 to $138 Sales at Brussels Livestock for the week ending August 27, 1993 were: fed cattle, 763; cows, 213; veal calves, 176; sheep & goats, light run; stockers, 1160; pigs, light run. The market at Brussels Livestock saw all classes of cattle selling on a steady trade. There were 418 steers on offer selling from $96 to $101 to the high of $108.75. Forty steers consigned by Gerald Geisel, Elmira averaging 1518 lbs. sold for an average of $92.38 with sales to $108.75 purchased by Star Brand Packers. Two steers consigned by Bill Sanderson, Bluevale averaging 980 lbs. sold for $104.50. Thirty steers consigned by Brayford Fur Farm, Alliston averaging 1322 lbs. sold for an average of $97.21 with sales Hallahans earn championship Area dairy farmers placed very well at the Huron County Holstein Show in Seaforth on Friday, Aug 20. The Grand Champion Cow was Eason Lolly Ronna Stylist of Lazy Meadows Dairy Farms owned by Jim Hallahan and family of RR3, Blyth. Lazy Meadows also took the Premiere Exhibitor prize. The Reserve Grand Champion, Glenwin Sterling Lassilee is owned by Harry Franken of Brussels, who also got the best udder class. Hon- ourable Mention in the latter went to Lazy Meadows. In the 4H division the Champion calf was Bellestein Starbuck Roily, owned by Henry Bos of RR3, Blyth. Honourable Mention was Conrad Bos. The Reserve Junior Champion went to Bellestein Broker Willy from Adrie Bos's Bellestein Farms, which also won the Honourable Mention in that class and took Junior Herd and highest composite RCA. to $104.75. Nine steers consigned by Jerry Cronin, Dublin averaging All young people in Canada between the ages of 16 and 24 are invited to participate in a public speaking competition at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. This year the first prize winner will receive $700 cash and the opportunity to spend a day touring various sections of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAF). The next five runners-up will also receive cash prizes. The competition is co-sponsored by the Farm Credit Corporation and OMAF and will take place at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair on Saturday, Nov. 13. Contestants will give a timed five- to seven-minute speech in 1387 lbs. sold for an average of $96.29 with sales to $99. There were 291 heifers on offer selling from $96 to $100 to the high of $112.25. Thirty-one heifers consigned by Maple Ridge Farms, Brussels averaging 1135 lbs. sold for an average of $94.63 with sales to $112.25 purchased by Star Brand Packers. Thirty-three heifers consigned by Maurice Coe, Shelburne averaging 1107 lbs. sold for an average of $97.58 with sales to $101.50. Four heifers consigned by Lorne Hackett, Lucknow averaging 1065 lbs. sold for an average of $97.18 with sales to $99.25. Twelve heifers consigned by J & B Laidlaw Farms, Atwood averaging 948 lbs. sold for an average of $95.08 with sales to $99. Thirteen heifers consigned by Mervyn Lewis, Holstein, averaging either of Canada's official languages on one of four suggested topics. The topics include: Cana- dian Food Production - Dispelling the Myths; Canadian Agriculture - Sharing Our Success with the World; Celebrating 65 Years - The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair; Food, Science, and You. The competition will be limited to the first 25 entries received. Official rules and applications forms are available at any office of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food or Farm Credit Corporation. Deadline for application is Oct. 1. Six veal consigned by John Verberg, Londesboro averaging 650 lbs. sold for an average of $108.42 with sales to $115. One veal consigned by Peter Martin, Listowel weighing 670 lbs. sold for $108.50. Sheep, under 50 lbs., sold to $104; and over 50 lbs, $80 to $100. Goats sold to $77.50.
