PeeWees begin Tri County play
The Brussels PeeWee 80s girls
team capped a successful season
Saturday, winning the Tri County
A crown at the playoff tournament
in Brussels.
The first game was 9 a.m against
Monkton, whom they narrowly
edged 13-12.
The second win came against the
Brussels 79s by another narrow
It was playoffs for two area
Squirt ball teams this Saturday as
Brussels and Belgrave competed in
the Winthrop tournament. Both
teams did well with Brussels losing
the A title to the first place
Goderich team, while Belgrave
came up away with a hard fought B
crown.
Winthrop had home game advan-
tage in the first game at 8 a.m., but
Brussels still edged theQ 9-7. A
walk to Nathan Garland in the first
with hits by Nathan Conley and
Joshua Gropp put the visitors up by
one. Unfortunately Winthrop tied it
in their half.
Both teams were shut down in
the second and tied it again by
scoring three in the third. After two
out Conley doubled to start it off
then made it home after Gropp sin-
gled, then reached second on an
error. A walk to Dale Martin and a
triple by Gilkes brought in the final
run of the inning.
Winthrop took the lead in the
fourth scoring one, while Brussels
was shut down, but a five run rally
in the fifth gave Brussels a solid
lead. Justin Ruttan got aboard on a
lead-off walk, followed by hits
from Paul Albers and Garland, a
walk to Conley and a single to
margin of 6-5. This advanced them
to the championship game against
Clinton whom they toppled 12-8.
Kara Lee Pepper ptiched two
complete games and all but two
thirds of another. Jenny Gowing
finished the job that game.

Gropp. Two more walks to Martin
and Mark Kroll contributed to the
lead.
Pitcher Conley shut down the
side with three strikeouts. Though
Winthrop was able to add two in
the sixth it wasn't enough for the
win.
The second game was against an
always tough Goderich team and
despite a valiant effort the Brussels
team only scored two while
Goderich scored 17. Albers scored
in the first off hits by Conley and
Gropp. The second run was scored
in the third by Mike Cooper.
Pitcher Conley struck out five
batters through six.
Brussels faced their nemesis in
the A finals late that afternoon.
Brussels got off to a great start as
Terry Nichol struck out the side. In
the bottom half Albers singled, then
the Goderich pitcher walked Gar-
land. Albers was caught stealing,
but a single by Gropp and another
walk loaded the bases. Unfortu-
nately though no runs were scored,
it showed a different side of the
team to the confident Goderich
players .
Brussels' aggressive play stopped
Goderich in the next inning, while
they swung ahead by one in the
The Belgrave PeeWee boys have
begun a best of three series in Tri
County baseball action.
The first game was played Aug.
12 in Seaforth and ended in victory
for Belgrave.
It didn't look good in the first as
the home team ran ahead by three,
but a six run second closed the gap.
Crossing the plate were Michael
Sanders, Adam Garniss, David
McBurney, Dean Walker, Marc
Alexander and Jamie McCallum.
Seaforth, also a had a good sec-
ond inning, however, adding anoth-
er five runs to their score.
It was a different game in the
third with the home team frozen at
eight, while Belgrave repeated their
six run second. This time runs were
scored by McCallum, Jeremy
Campbell, Michael McBurney,
David McBurney, Walker and
Alexander.
D. McBurney and Walker scored
again in the fourth, while Seaforth
clsoed the gap with four runs. The
last inning it was M. McBurney
and Campbell crossing the plate,
while the home team was shut

by 2 games
The Brussels Midget Boys are
down by two games against Moore-
field in the WOAA QuaArter Finals
played this past week.
The first game in Moorefield on
Thursday, Aug. 19. was lost by a
hair as the home team edged out
Brussels 5-4.
Strikeout honours went to Shawn
Conley with 14. Bob Steiss went
three for four with three singles
while Brett Clarkson was two for
three, including a double to score
the second run in the sixth inning.
Rob Johnston topped the seventh
inning with a homerun.
It was close again on Sunday._

sels. Clarkson had another good
day at the plate with three singles
in four at bats, while Johnnie Min-

bottom half. A patient Joel Kelling-
ton waited for the walk, which
eventually led to the go ahead run.
The tables began to turn in the
third when Goderich leapt up by
three. A tired Brussels team could-
n't get any back for the rest of the
game while Goderich finished with
12 and the A win.
Belgrave II played their first
game against Belgrave I right after
the first Brussels game. Robbie
McGee pitched well and scored
two homeruns. Myron Hussey also
homered.
The final score was 13-4 for Bel-
grave II.
The two Belgrave teams came
face to face in the second game just
shortly after noon. Belgrave II
came away with a 12-6 victory.
McGee and Justin Campbell each
got a homerun, while Tom Pfeiffer
helped McGee with the pitching
duties.
Winthrop met Belgrave H in the
B championship final later that
afternoon. Belgrave struggled to
get the lead and came up to their
last at bat behind by two. A couple
of hits to tie and a smack by Brian
Sanders to bring home the game
winning run made Belgrave II the

The second game was Aug. 16 in•
