PeeWees begin Tri County play The Brussels PeeWee 80s girls team capped a successful season Saturday, winning the Tri County A crown at the playoff tournament in Brussels. The first game was 9 a.m against Monkton, whom they narrowly edged 13-12. The second win came against the Brussels 79s by another narrow It was playoffs for two area Squirt ball teams this Saturday as Brussels and Belgrave competed in the Winthrop tournament. Both teams did well with Brussels losing the A title to the first place Goderich team, while Belgrave came up away with a hard fought B crown. Winthrop had home game advan- tage in the first game at 8 a.m., but Brussels still edged theQ 9-7. A walk to Nathan Garland in the first with hits by Nathan Conley and Joshua Gropp put the visitors up by one. Unfortunately Winthrop tied it in their half. Both teams were shut down in the second and tied it again by scoring three in the third. After two out Conley doubled to start it off then made it home after Gropp sin- gled, then reached second on an error. A walk to Dale Martin and a triple by Gilkes brought in the final run of the inning. Winthrop took the lead in the fourth scoring one, while Brussels was shut down, but a five run rally in the fifth gave Brussels a solid lead. Justin Ruttan got aboard on a lead-off walk, followed by hits from Paul Albers and Garland, a walk to Conley and a single to margin of 6-5. This advanced them to the championship game against Clinton whom they toppled 12-8. Kara Lee Pepper ptiched two complete games and all but two thirds of another. Jenny Gowing finished the job that game. In the B division Seaforth defeat- ed Belmore. Gropp. Two more walks to Martin and Mark Kroll contributed to the lead. Pitcher Conley shut down the side with three strikeouts. Though Winthrop was able to add two in the sixth it wasn't enough for the win. The second game was against an always tough Goderich team and despite a valiant effort the Brussels team only scored two while Goderich scored 17. Albers scored in the first off hits by Conley and Gropp. The second run was scored in the third by Mike Cooper. Pitcher Conley struck out five batters through six. Brussels faced their nemesis in the A finals late that afternoon. Brussels got off to a great start as Terry Nichol struck out the side. In the bottom half Albers singled, then the Goderich pitcher walked Gar- land. Albers was caught stealing, but a single by Gropp and another walk loaded the bases. Unfortu- nately though no runs were scored, it showed a different side of the team to the confident Goderich players . Brussels' aggressive play stopped Goderich in the next inning, while they swung ahead by one in the The Belgrave PeeWee boys have begun a best of three series in Tri County baseball action. The first game was played Aug. 12 in Seaforth and ended in victory for Belgrave. It didn't look good in the first as the home team ran ahead by three, but a six run second closed the gap. Crossing the plate were Michael Sanders, Adam Garniss, David McBurney, Dean Walker, Marc Alexander and Jamie McCallum. Seaforth, also a had a good sec- ond inning, however, adding anoth- er five runs to their score. It was a different game in the third with the home team frozen at eight, while Belgrave repeated their six run second. This time runs were scored by McCallum, Jeremy Campbell, Michael McBurney, David McBurney, Walker and Alexander. D. McBurney and Walker scored again in the fourth, while Seaforth clsoed the gap with four runs. The last inning it was M. McBurney and Campbell crossing the plate, while the home team was shut Midgets down by 2 games The Brussels Midget Boys are down by two games against Moore- field in the WOAA QuaArter Finals played this past week. The first game in Moorefield on Thursday, Aug. 19. was lost by a hair as the home team edged out Brussels 5-4. Strikeout honours went to Shawn Conley with 14. Bob Steiss went three for four with three singles while Brett Clarkson was two for three, including a double to score the second run in the sixth inning. Rob Johnston topped the seventh inning with a homerun. It was close again on Sunday._ afternoon when teams met in Brus- sels. Clarkson had another good day at the plate with three singles in four at bats, while Johnnie Min- ers went three for four including a triple. Pitchers Steiss and Conley had Continued on page 9 bottom half. A patient Joel Kelling- ton waited for the walk, which eventually led to the go ahead run. The tables began to turn in the third when Goderich leapt up by three. A tired Brussels team could- n't get any back for the rest of the game while Goderich finished with 12 and the A win. Belgrave II played their first game against Belgrave I right after the first Brussels game. Robbie McGee pitched well and scored two homeruns. Myron Hussey also homered. The final score was 13-4 for Bel- grave II. The two Belgrave teams came face to face in the second game just shortly after noon. Belgrave II came away with a 12-6 victory. McGee and Justin Campbell each got a homerun, while Tom Pfeiffer helped McGee with the pitching duties. Winthrop met Belgrave H in the B championship final later that afternoon. Belgrave struggled to get the lead and came up to their last at bat behind by two. A couple of hits to tie and a smack by Brian Sanders to bring home the game winning run made Belgrave II the B champs in a very exciting game. down. The second game was Aug. 16 in• Belgrave. This time Seaforth had the hit parade jumping ahead by 14-6 to tie the series. Local Squirts reach finals Belgrave runs were scored by D. McBurney, three, M. McBumey, K. Campbell, Victory Buchanan.
