Brussels Mites win squeaker The Blyth Mite softball team capped off their year by winning the B side of the year-end tournament this past Saturday in Seaforth. The Blyth team finished second in their round-robin section, losing to Egmondville, then beating Goderich Twp. They then moved into the B final against Stanley Twp. This game proved to be a real thriller. Todd Uhrig, with a four hit, 16 strikeout effort, took the win while Murray Pipe reached base twice in three tries. Game two saw the Tigers jump quickly into a six run lead, survive a shaky fourth inning, then seal the win with insurance runs in the fifth seven runs in the second extra inning and went on to win 24-19. Blyth received a take-home trophy and the players received pennants. Members of the winning team were: Shawn Henry, Derek Cook, Aaron Nonkes, Patrick Laffin, Justin Rinn, Tyler Wilson, Mark Machan, Robert John Popp, Mike Walsh, Steve Empey, Anthony deBoer, Cole Stewart and Kirk Stewart. Coaches were Fred deBoer, Dave Cook and Barney Stewart. and seventh innings. Doug Conley, with the win and Uhrig shared the pitching as well as both going three for four at the plate. Brussels now advances to the league semi-finals where they await the winners of the Coops Sports - Clinton; Walton - Blyth Decor; Seaforth Bears - Lieury Series to be decided. Brussels Mite Boys North finished league play in seventh place with a record of 10 losses, two wins. They were ready for the playoff tournament in Listowel this past weekend. Friday night they played the second place team Wingham Carter Waste Disposal. Despite playing well they fell to a 5-2 loss. Matthew McCall had a good game on the mound striking out 10 batters. Saturday morning it was Brussels against Fordwich on the B side which they won in an exciting 12- 11 game. Chris Coulter played an excellent game being on base and scoring three times. Matthew McCall was also three for three. Kyle Stephenson had reached safely on base to this point in the tournament. Brussels played the first place Wingham next. Andy Van Beek singled, followed by Stephen Todd's RBI extra inning run to win the game 5-4. Brussels advanced to the Championship game against Belmore. Van Beek went three for three with home runs by Todd and Ryan Mawhinney. Justin Walker • doubled to bring in two runs. Jimmy Franken tripled to loaded bases. Brussels went on to win 14-12 and claim the B crown. Players are: Chris Coulter, Justin Walker, Matthew McCall, Robbie McKercher, Andy Van Beek, Stephen Todd, Robbie Kerr, Ryan Mawhinney, Kyle Stephenson, Jimmy Franken, Josh Nichol, Evan Horst and Scott Zehr. Coaches were Steve Coulter and Wayne Todd.
