Call 887-9499. tfn Brussels Mosquitoes lose 8-1 Listowel Mosquitoes easily defeated Brussels soccer team 8-1 on Aug. 11. Listowel opened the scoring, then Brussels' Jillian Houston was able to tie the game. She broke through the Listowel defences and with a solid kick beat the Listowel goalie. This put Brussels back in the game and the first half ended with Listowel leading 2-1. In the second half the more aggressive Listowel team was able to take advantage of Brussels inability to get the ball out of their end. Listowel was able to capitalize on their many scoring chances and dominated the game. Six different Listowel players scored on Brussels' goalie Kevin Mutter. On a few occasions Brussels' forward Terry Nichol was able to carry the ball into Listowel territory but the rest of the team couldn't sustain the drive. The game ended 8-1 for Listowel. The last league game is at Drayton on Wednesday, Aug 18 and the tournament is on Saturday, Aug. 21 at Newry. Brussels' first game is at 9 a.m. Optimists win B The Brussels Optimists slo-pitch team worked their way to a "B" Division championship in the Seaforth tournament which ran from Aug. 13 to 15. They reached the semi-finals on Sunday by beating the Seaforth Raiders and the Stratford Swiss Chalet teams. With a loss to the Winthrop Titans, they competed in the "B" Division play-offs. The first round of playoffs matched the Optimists against the Dublin Devils in a very close game. They squeaked out a win with the help of Brian Deitner who made a game saving catch in the seventh inning with the bases loaded. the final score was 11-9. The Optimists came up against the home town team in the finals. By the end of the fifth they were down 4-3. They came back with four runs in the sixth and were able to hold the lead with good defen- sive plays. Throughout the tournament the Brussels Optimists combined for 20 homeruns. Tigers win playoff series The Brussels Tigers won for their first ever in Huron County Fastball League playoff action with a two game sweep of the Zurich Rangers. The Tigers who have been swept in the opening round of playoffs the previous two seasons opened the series with a 1-0 home field win, then eliminated the Rangers with a 9-4 win in Zurich.
