Brussels Livestock report 757 fed cattle on offer with strong active trading Sales at Brussels Livestock for the week ending Aug. 13 were: fed cattle, 757; cows, 187; veal calves, 111; sheep and goats, 122; stockers, 620; and pigs, light run. The market at Brussels Livestock saw fed cattle selling $.50 to $1.00 higher on a strong active trade, Cows sold on a steady trade. There were 466 steers on offer selling from $96 to $101 to the high of $115. Nine steers consigned by William Bennett & Sons Farms Ltd., Gorrie, averaging 1416 lbs. sold for an average of $104.74 with sales to $115 purchased by Norwich Packers. Thirty-two steers consigned by John Barbour, Orangeville, averaging 1400 lbs. sold for an average of $100.94 with sales to $110. Nineteen steers consigned by Dave Gratrix, Waubaushene, averaging 1326 lbs. sold for an average of $104.14 with sales to $109.25. Thirty-nine steers consigned by Brayford Fur Farm, Alliston, averaging 1397 lbs. sold for an average of $96.92 with sales to $109. A one percent protein increase with a 40 acre hay/haylage crop can mean as much as $1,000 based on today's soybean prices. To ensure maximum profit and a balanced feeding program, I would encourage routine feed testing and ration formulation.
