younger crowd
In recent years, motocross has
grown in popularity and is catching
the interest of the young.
Again this year, a motocvoss
school will be held at the Lee farm
in Walton, following the Trans Can
National Championships.
The three day school will be con-
ducted by former U.S. National and
Grand Prix professional motocross-
er Gary Semics.
Matt Lee, local organizer for the
event, says this is the first school
Mr. Semics has run in Canada
though he has considerable experi-
ence with schools in the States.
"The school teaches the racers to
rider better, safer and with more
productivity," says Matt. It deals
with the mental aspects of racing as
well as the physical challenge.
15 riders from beginner to expert
are accepted into the class so there
is a wide range of skills taught.
The school runs from Aug. 24 to
26 at a cost of $250. There are only
a few spots left so Mau advises
anyone interested to contact him
immediately at (519) 887-6735.
Pre-entry
The pre-entry deadline has
already passed so the entry fees are
as follows:
The Continental Motocross Club
(CMC) brought the PeeWee class
to Ontario, providing a beginning
CMC trailer on Wednesday
evening until 9 pm. and Thursday
class for the children.
The 50cc class is the smallest
displacement class in which the rid-
morning from 7 to 9 am. Vintage
riders may sign in all day Saturday
or Sunday morning from 7 to 9 am.
ers compete. These mini-bikes are
generally automatic and therefore
do not require a clutch to change
gears.
The age limit is nine years old
with some riders as young as three.
The riders in the 50cc class often
have their own track which allows
them to practice all day, under a
parent's supervision.
The next class is 60cc which has
riders to the age of 11.
The bikes are larger and the rid-
ers often have some experience so
they race on the full-size track.
This prepares them for the move to
the 80cc class.
The CMC can be contacted for
more information at (416) 642-
5607 if your young ones are inter-
ested in motocross.
Enthusiasts start young
Motocross racers start very young to gain experience on the circuit. Some local riders, such
as Steve Wernham of Winthrop, number 555, begin riding at the age of nine or 10. Nationally
there are competitors as young as five.

Class changes
Due to the lack of pre-entries in
the ATV Junior and Pro classes, the
CMC has deleted both from the
program. Due to the overwhelming
response from the beginner riders,
the CMC will offer the GP class.
