THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 18, 1993. Respite'Its over 80 celebrate The 55th Helm family reunion was held on Sunday, Aug. 15 at the home of Clare and Gladys Van Camp with an attendance of 20. Following a picnic lunch, Mrs. Ella Hackett of Lucknow presented a program of readings and contests. The candy guessing prize went to Ivy Cloakey and the birthday prize to Tom Helm. The business meeting was in charge of the president Tom Helm. A minute's silence was observed for deceased members. Mrs. Violet Ritchie gave the secretary/treasurer's report and Mrs. Isabel Hunter told of her work on the family history. She distributed a history booklet to each family and turned her books over to Tom Helm. It was agreed to Those attending the London Area Women's Institute Curators Workshop Aug. 10 at the Kirkton- Woodham Community Centre included Huron West District Curator, Lois Elliott, Clinton; Helen Lawson, Londesboro W.I.; Ruth Jardin, Auburn W.I.; Ada Taylor, Alice Nicholson, Jean Nethery and Wilma Higgins, hold the reunion on the third Sunday in July next year at the home of Tom and Joan Helm, Lucknow, with the program convenors Ivy Cloakey and Linda Campbell and the sports Bryce Ritchie and Doug Helm. The sports program was in charge of Bryce Ritchie and Joan Helm with kick-the-slipper, three legged races, wheelbarrow races and balloon races. Prizes were won by Mary-Belle Cranston, Bruce Campbell, Patrick Ritchie, Travis and Matthew Campbell and Terry and Genielle Cranston. Belgrave W.I. Jean Nethery received recognition for her most recent started house log. The History of Perth County and Stratford Festival was given. Displays of calendar plates, vinegar servers, dolls, china dishes with various plaids and cheese dishes were enjoyed by the 100 Women Institute members. The annual birthday party for 80 years and over was held in Belgrave United Church school room at 2 p.m. Aug. 9. Convenor of the program, Freda Johnston played a prelude of piano selections. Wilma Higgins on behalf of the Evening Unit welcomed everyone and opened with the poem "A Country Prayer'. The hymn "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" was sung. A solo by Harmony Spivey was enjoyed. She was accompanied by her mother Anne Spivey at the piano. Alice Nicholson contributed two readings. The orchestra of Gordon McBurney, Mary Coultes, Alex Robertson, Arnold Bruce and Jack and Audrey Adair got the toes tapping. Audrey played the mouth organ, also sang a solo. Don and Mary Vair entertained eople Visiting Mrs. Sybil Straker this past weekend were her son Douglas and his wife Denise Aylestock and their children Joanne, Cara, Priscilla, Erica, Angela and Jessica. Also visiting on the Saturday were Douglas's aunt and uncle from Scarborough, Priscilla and Collin Darrel, along with grandparents Lloyd and Vi Aylestock also from Scarborough. in their usual musical way with a sing-song and kazoo band with participants from the audience. Happy Birthday was sung to Laura Johnston and George Michie who celebrated their birthdays, Aug. 9. Rev. Paul Boughton brought greetings and asked the blessing. Helen Martin and Dorothy Logan cut the cake and Happy Birthday was sung to the over 80s: Sarah Anderson, Mary Chamney, Alice Scott, Winnie Vincent, Olive Bolt. Olive Campbell, Robena McBurney, Lewis Stonehouse, Gordon Walker, Norman Coultes, Charlie Smith, Alex Robertson, Dorothy Logan, Gordon and Agnes McBurney, Lauretta McBurney, Ruby Hanna, Helen Martin. Alvin Procter, Gordon Pengelly, Mildred Vannan, Esther McCallum, Charles Brewer, Charles Wilkinson, Pearl Shiells and Agnes Youngblut. The Evening Unit served angel cake, ice cream and tea to the 25 special people, their friends and relations. Charlie Smith, on behalf of the guests, thanked everyone for making it a great afternoon. Burns U.C.W. met at the Londesboro United Church on Wednesday, Aug. 4 with 15 members present. Clara Riley opened the meeting with a reading, "Learning to Trust". Hymn 502 was sung accompanied by Ida Leiper on the piano. The Lord's prayer was repeated in unison. Jean Fox gave a reading, "Heaven's Gate". Hymn 504 followed. Two readings were given by Clara Riley, "Dreams Come True" and "Price of a Drink". Clara closed with hymn 488 and thanked all who helped. Due to the absence of Renee Snell, Josephine MacGregor conducted the business. Roll call was answered with a bible verse then the minutes of the last meeting were read. Beryl Reid thanked the U.C.W. for the 50th wedding anniversary gift and cards sent for members. Clara Riley thanked the U.C.W. for the get well gift she received. A motion was made by Clara Riley that the Burns hymn books be left at the church. This was seconded by Joan Hoggarth. Josephine MacGregor and Renee The August meeting of the Londesboro Women's Institute was held at the hall on Wednesday evening, Aug. 11 with 13 members and two visitors present. Lois Elliott read a poem, "All Things Work Out." Roll call was answered by, "A Country I Would Like To Visit." The guest speaker was David Jones whose summer job has been working with young Snell helped with Bible School. Josephine reported the Burns U.C.W. share for Vacation Bible School was $7. The meeting closed with prayer. people from Spain and Mexico visiting in Canada on a cultural exchange during the month of July. Lois announced the September meeting will be Sept. 15. The Huron County Rally is on Oct. 4 at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food in Clinton and the London area convention will be Oct. 14 in Mount Brydges. Leita Wiley gave a PRO report.
