Brussels People Brian and Marlene Rutledge hosted a family get-together at their home on Sunday afternoon and evening with a barbecue and salads supper topped off with a nicely decorated birthday cake in recognition of Brian's 50th birthday, Bobbi Jo's 19th and Tyler's second as well as Marty and Kathy's third wedding anniversary all in the month of August. Ned and Kay Rutledge's and Lawrence and Mildred Jacklin's families attended, totalling 28. Lawrence and Mildred Jacklin returned home Thursday night after a pleasant three-day mini vacation. After driving through the Hockley Valley and heading east and north they arrived at Kirkfield just in time to see the boats being lowered at the locks, then on through Algonquin Park where an unconcerned moose patiently posed for the many people who had lined up on both sides of the road to take pictures. Proceeding on through the Madawaska Lakes district they spent their first night in Killaloe. After having a good view of many beautifully restored antique cars which were camped nearby for a car rally, they went over to Pembroke and on through the Canadian Forces Base at Petawawa. Then following the Ottawa River route north to Bisset Creek they took a little side trip into Quebec, crossing the border bridge to the picturesque little island of Rapides des Joachims. They proceeded on to Corbeil and North By, seeing through the home of the Dionne Quints, then south to Burks Falls where they spent their second night. Continuing on to Novar they located a Jacklin cousin they hadn't seen since the early 50s. After a nice visit with them they continued the drive through the scenic north until finally through the familiar lush, productive farm country they arrived home having travelled almost 1,000 miles. Lillian Moses and Leola Hood departed Aug 12 on Cherrey Bus Lines from Listowel as the first part of a Stoney Lake cruise. A lovely lunch was enjoyed in Mt. Julian, then they boarded the boat for a lovely two-hour cruise. It was very sunny and warm. On the way home they had a supper stop at the mall in Pickering, they arrived home about 10 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 11 a large horde of relatives and friends descended on the summer residence of Dave and Karen Hastings at Pine Lake. The occasion was a surprise birthday party for Karen. Those attending were: Don and Susan McNeil, Michelle and Paul, Cindy and Sarah, Hank and Phyllis, Bob and Barb Coleman, Ken Coleman, Bonnie and Jim Bradley, Jessica and Billie, Dave and Sherri Brussels Driver & Vehicle Licence Office will be closed on August 16th and re-opening on August 30th, 1993 Hughes, Jordon Hughes, Beth Bacher, Mary Lowe, Joe and Ethel Brewer, Jim and Ann Bosman, Wayne and Hope Lowe, Bonnie and Darryl, "Tammy and David, Krista and John, Murray and Ruth Lowe, John and Nicole. The news from Huronlea By Mary Gibbings Huronlea — where is it? We are the new home on the outskirts of Brussels. Our Activity Department along with the residents have been busy over the months of June and July. Every Sunday afternoon at 2 the regular church service has been held, conducted by one of the local ministers in the Brussels, Gorrie, Wingham area. Members of the churches are welcome to attend these services with their ministers. The Londesboro and Blyth Senior Citizen clubs have held the birthday parties for May and June. A program of music followed by treats was enjoyed by all. The residents enjoy the regular visits of Mr. and Mrs. Steffler of Brussels. Dorothy entertains them in the sitting room with a great variety of music selections played on the piano. In June we were pleased to have the kindergarten choir from the Walton School visit Huronlea. They sang songs, recited poems and visited with the residents. Juice and cookies were served. We were also pleased to have approximately 65 boys and girls from the grade five and six junior choir at the Grey Central Public School. Margaret Whitmore, the teacher and leader, along with the choir, provided a lively afternoon program. We would like to welcome all the new residents. Welcome is also extended for everyone to participate in the daily activities, join Isobel in the craft room, see Barb at the tuck shop or Steve and Barb in the daily routine program. To all the people in the Highland Apartments, we extend a welcome. We were pleased that they joined us for last week's barbecue. There is nothing like the smell of hot dogs and hamburgers. We hope our new neighbours in the Brussels area will come and visits us at Huronlea. If you are interested in volunteering your time or entertaining for an afternoon call me at Huronlea, 887-9267. 4 ONTARIO J UNIOR CITIZEN THE YEAR AWARDS CONTACT THIS COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER FOR DETAILS DEADLINE - OCTOBER 31, 1993 Aga Happy Birthday from your family Fair winner to compete at CNE Margaret Jarvis, representing the Brussels Fall fair, will be vying for the title of 1993 CNE Ambassador of the Fairs against over 100 other local fair winners in Toronto next week.
