Following a meeting Aug. 5 with
the Stratford Festival Board of
Governors, Artistic Director
Designate Richard Monette
announce the playbill for next
season.
Mr. Monette's first season as
Artistic Director will begin
Monday, May 30, 1994 and will
include a total of 10 productions;
four at the Festival Theatre, two at
the Avon Theatre and four at the
Tom Patterson Theatre. The
playbill consists of four works by
William Shakespeare, a Gilbert &
Sullivan musical, classic comedies
by Moliere and Rostand, a play by
Nobel Prize-winning playwright
Eugene O'Neill, a world premiere
production of a new play by
The AM 920 Country Cavalcade
and Barn Dance plays Goderich on
Saturday, Aug. 28.
Sporting a slightly new name to
reflect the changing face of country
music the Country Cavalcade and
Barn Dance showcases helps to
develop local artists. Also, the
show, which provides
entertainment appealing to all ages
acts as a fundraiser in the
community. The proceeds from the
Goderich show will be directed to
the Alexandra Marine & General
The opening night performance
of Moliere's The Imaginary Invalid,
translated by Donald M. Frame,
took place at the Festival Theatre
on Thursday, Aug. 5. Comedy and
satire combine in this timeless tale
of a hypochondriac who delights in
his imagined illnesses.

brother of the bride.
Mrs. Julia Mills of Islington was
the organist. The processional was
'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring' and
the 'Wedding March'. Special
music was provided by Janet
McCurry and her brother Jon who
sang 'Love Will Be Our Home' and
'Cherish the Treasure'.
During the signing of the
register, concert pianist Margaret
Baxtresser, relative of the bride,
played: Prelude by Chopin; Sweet
Remembrance by Medelsohn;
Important Event by Schuman; and
her own composition of 'Ode to
Heather and Dan'.
The reception was held at the
Candlelight Restaurant, Goderich,
which was decorated with purple
and white bells and streamers. The
tables were decorated with purple
and white cross stitched name tags,
a gift from the bride.
Following the dinner, wedding
Governor General's Award-
winning playwright Jean-Marc
Dalt* and a world premiere of
James Reaney's new adaptation of
Lewis Carroll's children's classic
Alice Through the Looking Glass.
Mr. Monette's selection of
directors, designers and company
for the 1994 productions, along
with some of his other exciting
plans for the Stratford Festival
during his tenure, will be
announced at a press conference in
mid-December.
At the Festival Theater will be
Twelfth Night, by William,
Shakespeare, Othello by William
Shakespeare, The Pirates of
Penzance by W.S. Gilbert and
Hospital by the Goderich Lioness
Club.
No two shows are ever alike
because new musicians are added
for each performance. One person
who has been part of all shows in
the past decade is Ernie King.
Ernie has performed on the CKNX
Barn Dance since 1948, and is
looking forward to returning to
Goderich.
Also on the show are two bands
Detour, which features the
Williamson brothers, play a mix

as Mine, Bernard Hopkins as
Monsieur Purgon, William Hutt as

White as Monsieur Fleurant.
guests were entertained with a
programme, emceed by the groom's
uncle Henry Busch of Royal Oak,
Michigan. The programme
included Rachel Dube singing 'I
Will Be There', a special phone
call for Dan from Former President
George Bush, Don Vair as Country
Clem, reading and advice from the
bride's uncle John Campbell of
Camrose, Alberta, and songs by
John McDowell and Garth Walden
— one of which was written
especially for Dan and Heather.
The programme ended with a slide
presentation of the bride and
groom.

Shakespeare, In the Ring a new
play by Jean-Marc Dalpd, The
Comedy of Errors by William
Shakespeare, and Long Day's
Journey Into Night by Eugene
O'Neill.

day's Wine has a pure, yet
contemporary, country sound.
Richard Knechtel, well known
throughout midwestern Ontario,
joins AM 920's morning
personality Steve Peyton, the
Teeswater Connection vocal duo,
and fiddler, Michelle Lubineicki,
on stage.
When Doc Cruickshank, founder
of CKNX Radio, started the Barn
Dance in 1937, little did he know
that the show would still be on the
road 56 years later. Through the
years Tommy Hunter, Al Chemey
and Larry Mercey performed on the
show. In fact, seven of the first 30
inductees of the Canadian Country
Music Hall of Fame have played on
the CKNX Barn Dance.
Celebrating a great tradition and
building the future with local talent,
the AM 920 Country Calvacade
and Barn Dance plays on Aug. 28
at the Goderich Community Centre.
Show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are
$10 in advance and $12 at the door.

The Illusion'
The opening night performance
of Pierre Corneille's The Illusion,
the 1993 Stratford Festival Young
Company Production, took place at
the Tom Patterson Theatre on
Friday, Aug. 6. Translated and
adapted by Ranjit Bolt, The Illusion
is a comedy by the first master of
the French Classical theatre of the
17th century; a celebration of the
theatre itself, which deals with the
familiar struggle to separate fantasy
from reality.
The Illusion is directed by
Director of the Young company
Marti Maraden, with design by
Victoria Wallace, music composed
and performed by Keith Thomas,
lighting design by James Milburn,
movement choreographed by John
Broome, fights directed by John
Stead and sound designed by Evan
Turner. Magic Consultant was Tom
Baxter and the Text Consultant was
John Van Burek.
The Stratford Festival Production
of The Illusion features Francoise
Balthazar as Alcandre, Stephen
Bogaert as Clindor, Jeffrey Kuhn as
Dorante, Gerry Mackay as Adraste,
Michael Mawson as Pridamant,
Yanna McIntosh as Lyse,
