On Aug. 7, the Blyth Atoms travelled to Goderich to compete in the year-end soccer tournament. It was a long day, but the team performed well to fmish second out of the eight teems in their division. The day began bright and early with a game at 8 against the Goderich Resorts. Goderich dominated play in the first half, but Blyth capitalized on the few scoring chances they had so they only trailed 3-2 at half time. Jeremy Van Amersfoort scored the first goal on a long pass from Teague Onn. Later, good ball handling by Dave Ansley allowed him to help set up his own goal. Elisha. Courtney took his pass, moved the ball ahead to Kristie Blair, who spotted Ansley alone in front of the Goderich net for the second Blyth goal. However, the second half wasn't as good for the team as the early hour began to affect many of the Blyth players. Goderich scored two more goals to leave Blyth with a 5- 2 loss. The team's second game was played at 10 against Clinton. Play was evenly matched throughout most of the first half, until Van Amersfoort finally opened the scoring for Blyth. He followed this with two more goals in the first half, and another in the second to secure Blyth's 4-1 win. Peter Nonkes was solid in goal to take away many scoring opportunities for Clinton. Defence players Darwin Buffmga and Aron Nonkes also played well to help their team to victory. The next game wasn't until 4 so most of the team spent the afternoon as cheer leaders for the Blyth Mosquitoes and Pee Wees who were also playing in Goderich. Finally, the Atoms took to the field against-Wingliam. Both teams played well with equal opportun- ities, leaving the score tied 1-1 at the half. Blyth's goal was scored by Van Amersfoort on a good pass from E. Courtney and Onn. Shortly into the second half Van Amersfoort scored again assisted by Onn and D. Buffinga, and later scored an unassisted goal to ensure the win. Half backs Nick Courtney and Onn both played very well to break up many Wingham rushes, and to help their team advance to the Championship game. After a short break, Blyth faced Goderich Resorts again to determine a champion. The long day and the previous loss to this team worked against Blyth as they played with little spirit and energy. Goderich scored two quick goals before Blyth replied with Van Amersfoort scoring a goal assisted by E. Courtney. This was to be Blyth's only goal, however, as they lost the championship game by a score of 8-1. Despite this loss, the Atoms had a good day and should be congratulated for their effort. Besides those already mentioned, other players contributing to Blyth's success at the tournament were: Pauline Blok, Sabrina Buffmga, Derek Cook, Joy Cullen, John George, Matthew Good and Bonnie Stewart. On Saturday, Aug. 7 the Blyth Pee Wee Soccer team played for the first time in the annual Goderich tournament. While the team was unfortunately represented by low numbers, with the support of some of the Mosquitoes, they were able to make a good showing, working their way up to the final championship game with one loss and two wins. Excellent goal tending by Zoey Onn provided two shutouts against Wingham and Clinton in two early wins with scores of 4-0 and 3-0. Top scorer in the first three games was Jerry Mason with seven of the eight goals. Assists went to Mike Courtney, two; April Van Amersfoort, Amanda Howson, Greg Blok, and Jeff Cowan. The other goal wa a long mid-half boot by Kris Wilson. In the championship game Blyth was up against the tough Goderich team which had lost only one game all season (to Blyth) and was unbeaten in the tournament. Despite their larger numbers and more experience as a team, Blyth held them to a 2-1 loss, both their goals coming in the final five minutes of the last half. Special mention must be made of the phenomenal goal keeping of Jerry Mason, who despite an excellent defensive effort, was forced to stop upwards of 30 shots during the game. The fullback line of Casey and Kelly Boven, and Greg Blok was also excellent, holding off the determined Goderich attack. Similarly, Kris Wilson as right half was a major player in all games. The lone goal in the final game was scored by Jeff Cowan from a Casey Boven corner kick. The Pee Wees finished the regular season with six wins, two ties, and two losses, again giving them the second place position in regular season play. This was the first official year for this level of soccer in Blyth. SHARP DEALS ON QUALITY- CLEAN READY-TO-GO USED CARS Great Savings on These Used Cars & Trucks. With a new lineup in the field, fullback Mike Cooper was able to slow the Palmerston attack at the front of the goal. Going into the second half, the game was scoreless.
