Council approves $3,792 for tractor repairs
Brussels village councillors
approved $3,792 in repairs to the
tractor at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre when it
met Aug. 3.
The repairs will be paid for by
the BM&G Recreation Committee
but all bills over $2,000 must be
approved by the three municipal
councils involved before the work
can proceed. Councillors learned
that an injection pump on the trac-
tor must be replaced for it to func-
tion. The part must be imported.
"It's fix it or be out of business,"
Reeve Gordon Workman said. The
tractor is in good shape except for
this problem, he said.

Council approved awarding a
contract to Lavis Contracting of
Colborne Township council held
a special meeting on July 29 to
review the Social Contract
legislation.
Originally the township had been
advised that their target saving
would be $10,220. However, due
to the provincial government
changing the method in which the
target figure would be calculated,
the township's target saving was set
at $1,180.36, which has been met
since Colborne did not employ a
summer student for 1993.
Council held its regular bi-
monthly meeting on Aug. 3.
Council enacted a by-law
authorizing the reeve and clerk to
sign a Road Maintenance
Agreement with Ken and Linda
Brindley and the Hunter's Beach
Cottage Association. The signing
of the agreement will allow Mr.
Brindley to reapply for a zoning
by-law amendment to permit a
farmer's flea market on his
property.
Council adopted a by-law to
change the zoning on Part Lot 12,
Conc. 8, E.D. from general
agriculture to agricultural small
holding - special. The property is
owned by .Juergen and Edna
Becker.
Julie Jackson, Planner, Huron
County Planning and Development
Department, was present to update
council on the proposed Homan
Subdivision. She suggested
council hold another public
meeting to discuss the proposal
with the applicant, the government
agencies and interested property
owners.
Council set a tentative date of
Sept. 14.
Council passed a by-law 22-
1993, to name a township road.
Clinton for the paving of ablock of
Thomas St. as a cost of $7,450.
The paving will be undertaken
because 35 per cent funding from
the Ministry of Transportation for
the curb and sidewalk construction
at Church and John streets meant
the village had additional construc-
tion funds available. It was noted
that unless the village uses its grant
allocation it may be cut back next
year.
The work will be carried at the
same rate as the previous contract
for work on Church, John and Eliz-
abeth Streets.

No employees in Brussels will be
affected by the province's "social
contract" negotiations in 1993, Lori
Pipe, acting clerk-treasurer told
The road between County Road 31
and Concession 2, W.D. has now
been officially named Westmount
Road. The road had been known
locally as Deviation Road, but had
never been named by by-law.
Council authorized and approved
the payment of the bills and
accounts in the amount $93,337.30
for the period ended July 31 as
supported by the treasurer's list of

A memorandum of agreement
was signed by the school sector in
Huron County, under the Social
Contract Act.
According to a media release on
Aug. 5, the Huron County Board of
Education (HCBE) has met with
the Ontario Secondary School
Teachers' Federation District 45,
the Hurdir,Women Teachers' Asso-
ciation and the Ontario Public
School Teachers' Federation to sign
the agreement.
The agreement assures the teach-
ers' groups of the 20 percent dis-
count on the required target
because they signed prior to the
Aug. 10th deadline.
The school sector will now begin
working on a local agreement to
meet the targets imposed by the
Social Contract.
HCBE will require its teachers
to accept approximately six days
unpaid leave between Sept. 1,1993
and March 31, 1994.
In the last two years of the deal,
unpaid leave will vary across the
province.
council. Only one employee in the
village ordinarily tops the $30,000
payroll floor set for those who were
to have their salaries rolled back
and she is currently on maternity
leave which will leave a salary of
less than $30,000.

Councillors turned down a
request by a local business that it
be able to plant trees in front of its
location. Councillors pointed out
the difficulty of plowing the side-
walk. "The idea's great but there's
no room for the front end loader to
get down the sidewalk," Reeve
Gordon Workman said. "They
would have to be responsible for
shoveling the walk seven days a
week."
