THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4, 1993. Blyth Atoms finish season with big win The Children's Aid Society's 19th summer camp program is turning out to be one of the best ever, says Sue Munnoch, co-ordinator of Volunteer Programs. To date 170 children have been registered and are participating in residential or day camp programs. "Every day more children are added to our list and we anticipate a total of 200 children to have a wonderful time this summer, all through the generosity of the people of our community," Ms Munnoch said. Children from all over Huron County participate in this camp experience. Ages range from four to 14 years. There are four camp employees in 1993. Two positions are funded through the federal government's Student Employment/Experience Development program, with two Ontario Transportation Minister Gilles Pouliot said July 29 the government will continue to promote bicycle helmet use and safe cycling to prepare Ontario cyclists for the mandatory use of helmets in two years. "Increased awareness and education, along with legislation, has the most potential for improving cycling safety," said Pouliot. "Safety is our first priority, that's why we gave our support to his measure." Pouliot's comments follow Wednesday's final reading of Bill 124, a private member's bill introduced by London North MPP Dianne Cunningham, which makes the wearing of bicycle helmets mandatory on Oct. 1, 1995. The two years prior to the implementation of Bill 124 will give the government more time to promote the use of bicycle helmets. During that time the government will work in partnership with safety and community groups, police, cyclists and helmet manufacturers to encourage safer cycling and increase the number of cyclists voluntarily wearing helmets. Ms Munnoch says, this year's weather has been perfect for this program. Rain days are spent in local church halls or libraries working on quiet, craft activities. It has been designed to be child friendly and will give us space for rainy day programs," she says. A MESSAGE FROM THE ROYAL UFE SAVING SOCIETY CANADA IN PARTNERSHIP WITH The Blyth Atoms soccer team finished off their regular season play with a decisive 6-0 victory over the Clinton team on July 27. Jeremy Van Amersfoort had an excellent game scoring all six goals for the Blyth team. Four of the goals were scored in the first half with assists on the first goal going to Shonda Loader and Kristy Blair. The second goal was assisted by Darwin Buffinga, while the third goal was assisted by Teague Onn. Nick Courtney took a throw in from Onn and passed it to Van Amersfoort for the final goal of the first half. In the second half Onn picked up two more assists while Loader and Courtney each added one more assist. Goalie Peter Nonkes had another strong game, recording his third shutout of the season. This game was good preparation for the year-end tournament being held on Saturday, August 7. All games are being played in Goderich with the Atoms' first game at 8 a.m. community. This year, as in the past, people have responded and we can afford to provide a wonderful summer for children in need. We say thank you to each and everyone who helped." says Ms Munnoch. Camp director, Sherri Howson, is assisted by Samantha McDonagh, Katharine Murphy and Allison Slotegraaf. Ms Howson's major role is to organize residential camp placements for approximately 125 children at local church camps. She works with parents and children to select the best camp to suit their needs. She collaborates with her assistants to plan interesting and Bicycle helmets soon mandatory
