On July 15, at the Goderich
Provincial Court, Russell
Ackerman was levied a fine of
$2,000 including court costs after
pleading guilty to the cutting of
undersized trees in contravention of
a long-standing Huron County By-
Law.
On May 9, 1993 a complaint was
received by Tree Commissioner Joe
Gibson regarding the cutting of
undersized trees on Part of Lots
28,29 Maitland concession in
Colborne Twp. An inspection took
place with co-operation between
the county, The Ministry of Natural
Resources, the landowner and the
cutter at which time it was
determined that 20 per cent of the
harvest were deemed to be
undersized trees. The main species
being harvested was hard or sugar
maple which at present is bringing
premium prices due to its high
demand.
The purpose of the by-law is to
maintain and improve the forest,
soil, game and fish resources of the
County.
Both Huron and Perth Counties
have had tree cutting by-laws in
effect for more than 40 years.
The secretary's report was given
by Mrs. Siertsema and Mrs.
Cloakey gave the financial report.
Mrs. Nicholson read a synopsis on
the 23rd Psalm from a booklet
written by Mariano Gegangi.
Mrs. Fred Scott read a poem and
also Mrs. Nicholson gave two
readings. Collection was dedicated
and 40 sick and shut-in visits were
recorded.
The hostess served lunch and a
social time was enjoyed.
Lawson had the bride-to-be hunt
for gifts in hidden places. There
were five of them.
Elizabeth Lawson read the
address. Marjorie thanked everyone
for coming and for the gifts.
Collection and draw money were
taken up. The draw, donated by
Geraldine Dale, was won by June
Fothergill.
Ora Bruce read a piece "Take
Time For Ten Things".
Cards were played. Lunch was
served by Ora and Edythe.
be the exchange program with
David Jones and guests. Everyone
is welcome. Roll call is "Name a
country you would like to visit."
Anyone who plans on harvesting
wood from their woodlot for
commercial purposes is required to
file a "Notice of Intent" with the
county at least five days prior to the
onset of the operation.
Trees, unless defective, must
meet a minimum diameter size to
be eligible for legal harvest. (ie
hard maple must be 18" in diameter
or 57" in circumference measured
18" above the ground).
