Blyth, Hullett look at closing dump one day to save money A joint council of Blyth and Hul- lett Twp. met on July 27, and decided that there would be a cut back in the hours of operation at the Blyth-Hullett landfill site. Councillors approved the closing of the landfill site on Wednesdays while extending, the hours of opera- tion on Saturday. The motion was made by Hullett Councillor Ken Hulley and Blyth Reeve Dave Lee stating the landfill site would be open from 8 am. to 2 pm. of Saturdays. In an amendment to the motion, Blyth Councillor Mason Bailey The Blyth Festival is in the pro- cess of looking for a new general manager as Ray Salverda will not be renewing his contract for next Despite the efforts of local resi- dents the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce closed its Dungannon branch last week. An announcement was made two months ago after which petitioners gathered 300 names to protest the closure. The petition was then sent to the district manager John Harris. In a report form the Goderich Sig- nal-Star a CIBC media relations representative said that branch clo- sures are determined by the amount of business and traffic a branch has. The Dungannon branch was only open two days a week, and the rep- said the time change should be made for a trial period of six months to see how the new hours suited the residents. The new hours will begin on Sept. 1 to allow time for the waste disposal contractors to adjust the work hours of their employees and for the councils to notify the public. Reeve Lee stated several reasons for this change. In order to cut costs (with regard to the Social Con- tract); the hours worked by the landfill staff must be made more efficient, the amount of dirt used to cover the fill could be reduced and the operating hours of the tractors season. Mr. Salverda has been with the festival for two years, during the hard, restructuring times, he says. resentative said it "Doesn't make business sense" to keep it open. The district manager was report- ed as saying that no alternative measure are planned and that bank- ing machines wouldn't be feasible because a minimum number of monthly transactions is needed to cover installation and operating costs. The CIBC branch was the only bank in Dungannon. The closest branches are in Wingham, Blyth and Goderich. While Lucknow is closer, there is no CIBC located there. needed for the work would be less- ened. Hullett Councillor Tony Midde- gaal said the extra expense was caused by the double covering of the dump site as well as the hours worked by the men. At present, the site is covered on Thursday and Monday. Reeve Lee said by reduc- ing the coverage to once per week it could reduce the cost of the dirt cover, machine hours and man hours by 40 percent. The contractor for Blyth, Jim Anderson has agreed to dump his pickups at the site on Saturdays only but, Hullett contractor Cham- "It is time for a fresh insight into the financial problems faced by the festival." He says, "Working for the Festi- val has been an experience I will never forget. It has been extremely interesting and educational." Mr. Salverda says in these reces- sionary times, "It is necessary to have a two-income family." They will be moving to a larger centre where his wife, Crystal will be able to pursue a career. They have not yet chosen a new city, but are looking at the options available to them. The Salverda family has lived in Blyth since 1986 and have enjoyed the community. Mr. Salverda was also chairman of the Rutabaga Fes- tival this year. Mr. Salverda will be leaving his position as of Oct. 31, 1993 and says the board hopes to have a new manager in place by that time. Applications will be accepted until Sept. 17. ney Sanitation is balking at the idea of having his men work that day. He wants to continue the Wednes- day pickup and dumps, says Blyth Clerk-Treasurer Helen Grubb. Mr. Anderson will still be pick- ing up on Saturday mornings but, starting earlier in the day. Ms Grubb says these cutbacks arc necessary to help reduce the operating costs yet maintain the landfill site properly.
