THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 21, 1993. From the Minister's Study Pastor says, 'Reserve a place in heaven' By James H. Carrie, Pastor, The Missionary Church, Auburn He looked pretty pleased as he stood posing for the camera, clutching his diploma and shifting uncomfortably in his unaccustomed suit and tie, his hair parted in the middle and plastered down on both sides. My grandson was ready now to move on to the heady heights of high school. In a few days, or weeks, I shall be attending the graduation ceremony for my mother-in-law. No, Mom is not a late bloomer or a slow learner, but she is moving on, too. Her service will be held in a church, however, and then will move to the cemetery. Just a few weeks ago the doctor discovered that the cause of her distress was a cancerous growth in the liver. So, mother, like the Apostle Paul, has "finished her course". You can imagine that there is a heaviness in our hearts and a cloud of sadness that shadows our days, but there is a sense of anticipation, also, for those of us in the family who are Christians, because death for the Christian is only a door through which one passes into the presence of the Saviour and into the realities of a blissful eternity, for which this life is only the preparation. Mother began her preparations to meet the Lord more than 40 years ago. I remember the occasion. It was the final service of the annual church camp meeting. Although mom had been raised in a Christian 0 bituaries LUCILLE (LOU) ISSAC Lucille (Lou) Issac, of Auburn passed away at Parry Sound Dis- trict General Hospital on Thursday, July 1, i993 at the age of 62. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Beatrice Gagnon. She was the loving mother of Linda (Roxanne) and her husband Edward Williams, Moose Deer Point; Penny Issac, Toronto; Karen and her husband Bill Littlechild, Mount Forest; Dwight and his wife Teri, California; Colette and her husband Continued from page 3 growth and development or we begin to die. Physical death is bad but to die spiritually is as well. Christianity started with 12 and has grown to great multitudes. Rev. Ramirez said that at each manse in which he has lived he has planted a tree. He went to a former manse this year where his family planted two maple trees. They hardly recognized the trees. When they last saw the maples there wasn't enough shade for one to sit in. "Now", he said, "you could have a party under them." God's spirit produces Continued from page 2 whereas Satan's spirit destroys, he said. We can be influenced by several spirits; such as, self, satan, tradition, and God. Only the spirit of God produces good things. Mark Hiller was song leader and his daughter, Denise, was the pianist for the Sunday Service. Christy Pardys accompanied by Wendy Martin provided special music on the flute. home and was blessed with godly parents, her spiritual interest had waned, and now, at 40 years of age, she was a long way from God. During the course of the camp services her heart had been stirred, however, and she stood waiting for the final service to conclude with an invitation hymn, resolved to "walk the saw-dust trail", and to seek God at the altar of prayer. The evangelist then did a most unusual thing. He announced that he intended to close that final service without giving the usual invitation to come to the altar and seek God! I had no idea of my mother-in- law's intentions, but I became agitated, suddenly, my heart beating wildly. Was God moving me to say something? I didn't know, but I found myself calling for the attention of the evangelist and asking for permission to speak. I admitted, then, that I didn't know whether or not I was in order, but I suggested that it would do no harm to sing an invitation hymn and to invite people to the altar. The evangelist was gracious and acceded to my request. As soon as the singing started, to my amazement, mom moved out of the seat and headed for the altar, along with others. What a night of rejoicing! That night Mom started for the Kingdom and has never looked back. I expect that her coronation service, when it comes, will be glorious! We will sing her Jeff Cook, Auburn; and Kim and her husband Alfred Loon, Mistassi- ni, Que. Mrs. Issac will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Tracy and James, Sarah and Michael, Ariel and Cole, Lisa, Dan and Jason. She was the great grand- mother of Dawn and Andrew. Mrs. Issac was the dear sister of Claire, Carmen, Anita, Collette, Lorraine, Claudette, Elaine, Linda, Bertha, Jenny, Maurice, Danny, Steve, Ronald, Guy and the late Jimmy, and their families. The funeral was held in Parry Sound on Saturday, July 3. Interment at the Hillcrest Ceme- tery, Parry Sound. We are like trees and continue to grow. When we are ready God will transplant us in the garden of glory, he said. He asked, "What is the Kingdom of God?" It is like hope to keep us alive. We must continue to grow. Then Rev. Ramirez took time to favourite hymns and read of Christ's victory over death and the great hope of the resurrection. At the cemetery, the Christians (those who are not Christians won't know it) will stand by the grave and sing Eliza Hewitt's grand hymn: Sing the wondrous love of Jesus, sing His mercy and His grace; In the mansions bright and blessed He'll prepare for us a place. While we walk the pilgrim path- way clouds will over-spread the sky; But when travelling days are over, not a shadow, not a sigh. Let us then be true and faithful, trusting, serving every day; Just one glimpse of Him in glory will the toils of life repay. Onward to the prize before us! Soon His beauty we'll behold; Soon the pearly gates will open, we shall tread the streets of gold. When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be! When we all see Jesus, we'll sing and shout the victory! Before "graduation day" comes for you, make sure that the officiating minister at your funeral doesn't have to act like a defense lawyer who knows that his client is guilty but is charged with presenting him in the best possible light. As a minister I have had the painful duty of trying to find something comforting to say to the family of some of the ones at whose funeral I have officiated. RALPH (PAT) ROWLAND Ralph (Pat) Rowland passed away on Monday, July 2, 1993 at Wingham and District Hospital. He was in his 87th year. Mr. Rowland was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters. He leaves many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on July 7. Rev. Randy Banks Officiat- ed. The pallbearers were Don Bray, Lyle Martin, Ed Rowland and Barry Hoegy. Interment was at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Ethel. In remembrance, donations to the Brussels United Church would be appreciated. reflect on his time spent here in Blyth. In closing he said, "Let us keep on growing, by believing in the Kingdom of God, until we reach His grace of glory." The final Hymn was "Take My Life and Let It Be". There are no appropriate prayers for unbelievers and no comforting Scriptures. Christian funerals are for Christians! If you have not already done so, find a place of prayer where you can repent of your sins, so that God can forgive you and transform you and reserve for you a place in heaven. Then "graduation day" will be something worth celebrating! 887-9203 Spiritual death, sermon theme Are your children receiving the benefits of Quality Daily Physical Education?
