Brussels Livestock report
Veal prices range from $83.50 to a high of $122.50
Sales at Brussels Livestock for
the week ending July 16 were: fed
cattle, 817; cows, 180; veal calves,
189; sheep and goats, 115;
stockers, 450 and pigs, light run.
The market at Brussels Livestock
saw feed steers and heifers selling
50 cents to $1 lower. Cows traded
$2 lower.
There were 404 steers on offer
selling from $96 to $101 to the
high of $113.25. One steer
consigned by Earl Geisel, West
Montrose, weighing 1350 lbs. sold
for $113.25 to StarBrand Packers.
Fourteen steers consigned by
Harvey McMurchy, Clarksburg,
averaging 1300 lbs. sold for an
average of $98.42 with sales to
$108. Two steers consigned by
Lyle Noble, Glencairn, averaging
1340 lbs. sold for an average of

Rural Organization Specialist
The Ministry of Agriculture and
Food is becoming a key player in
Community Economic Develop-
ment. For some time OMAF has
encouraged communities to work
together to discuss and meet
challenges facing them. It has
provided opportunities for both
farm and non-farm clients to
improve quality of life in rural
Ontario.
To guide OMAF's involvement
in broader Rural Community
Development Issues and to co-
ordinate these efforts with other
Ministries, a Rural Development
Secretariat has been created as part
of OMAF's new reorganization. It
will focus on promoting economic
renewal in communities and on
offering assistance toward
community development.
As well, an External Advisory
Committee on Rural Issues will

announced July 9 a grant of $2,780
for a home composting program in
the village of Bayfield. The
funding, announced on behalf of
Environment and Energy Minister
Bud Wildman, will be provided
through the Municipal Reduction/
Reuse Program.

Over the past several years
OMAF has funded and assisted a
number of capacity building and
planning projects as well as other
community development initia-
tives. A series of grass root projects
across the province received
OMAF funding in February of this
year. These included 10 Steps to
Community Action Projects in 18
communities including Huron, A
Strategic Planning Exercise in one
county, two ethanol feasibility
studies, and five community infor-
mation and services directories.
OMAF will now be involved in
the jobsOntario Community Action
Initiative. This initiative has three
major components; Community
Development, which will provide
leadership training, community
based strategic planning, strategic
economic studies, feasibility
day. Today, more than 800,000
homes use backyard composters to
reduce their domestic wastes by as
much as one-third. Thanks to the
support of our municipal partners,
our government is confident of
reducing the waste going to local
landfill sites by at least 50 per cent
by the year 2000."
