Dopeople go to church in the summer?
By Pastor Steve Webb
Cranbrook Knox
Some summer questions for you.
Where do people go to church in
the summer?
Any given Sunday when you go
to church the attendance always
seems to be down. A good weather
weekend you tell yourself; people
took time to enjoy the gifts of God
today. Then you meet them on the
street and ask hOw they enjoyed
their weekend.
"Well, we really didn't, you
know. We went to Church."
Really, well I suppose that's
good; it always does a preacher's
heart good to hear people have
been in church whey they were not
in their own, but that part about
going to church meaning they
didn't enjoy the weekend does
leave me a bit confused.
But my question is this. What
church did they go to? Any of the
churches that I attend during my

holidays all seem to have the same
problem; they are about half empty,
as opposed to half full. The
amazing thing is that the answer is
always the same. "Well the
summer is always like this, most of
the regulars here take the summer
to go to other churches for a
change."
There is a church some place that
has a wonderful attendance, at least
during the summer when all the
other churches are down in theirs.
Why do holidays always seem to
leave you exhausted?
You know the old story, you
work like crazy trying to get ready
to take your holiday and then while
you're away there are so many
things to see and do, you never get
the chance to rest. Even if you stay
home, nobody else wants to; the
family wants to do "something
different."
We always stay home, can't we
do something or go some place?"
AGNES (NANCY) ROY
Mrs. Agnes (Nancy) (Turnbull)
Roy of Clinton, formerly of Hullett
Twp, passed away on June 27,
1993 at Victoria Hospital in Lon-
don. She was 70.
Mrs. Roy was a member of the
Church of Scotland.
She was born in Bonhill, Scot-
land to William and Mary
(Whitelaw) Turnbull. She immi-
grated to Canada in 1952. She met
her husband Bruce when they both
worked for Ontario Hydro in north-
em Ontario, in 1957.

The Huron-Perth Presbyterial
United Church Women held their
annual Campsite Experience at the
United Church Camp - Bimini in
June. Sixty women attended.
The theme "We Gather
Together" was carried out in the
worship service with the singing of
the hymn. "We Gather Together to
Ask the Lord's Blessing" led by
Barbara Richardson and Eloise
Hagerman, St. Marys. Helen
McKnight, Listowel, conducted a
sing-song, with Anne Irvin on the
piano. The women were welcomed
by Presbyterial President, Betty
Graber.
Shirley Hackett, Stratford, was
the leader for the gentle exercises
outdoors, and also arranged a
scavenger hunt around the camp.
This gave all those participating an
opportunity to explore the grounds
of Camp Bimini.
Kate Cunningham, Stratford,
gave an interesting "day by day"
account of her experiences as a
camper.
Reta Standeavon spoke of her
experiences, camping, in the early
days of Camp Bimini. A pot luck
lunch was served. Helping in the
kitchen were Marg Ashcroft,
Shirley Weicker, Tavistock and
Kathy Schaefer Hampstead.
Jean Wilson, Listowel, led in
Bible Study. Her topic "Women
who changed their world." She
chose these women of the Bible:
Jezebel and Eve, Ruth and Mary of
The funny thing is, you were
thinking the same thing; isn't there
some place they could go?
So gather up everything you
need, pack the car, pack the kids,
pack the dog, take the dog out of
the car and go. Then when you get
home the last thing you want to do
is unpack the car, unpack the kids
and find the dog. But you do it all
in the name of rest and relaxation.
Why do some holidays seem like
that?
There is a person some place that
is enjoying a wonderful holiday,
peaceful and quiet, at least until we
all figure out where it is and join
him or her.
In our busy lives today we all
seem to need to get away for
awhile. I urge you not to take time
away from church or from God.
Spend time in God's presence.
That is where you will find rest for
your soul. Matthew 11:28-30.
