Belgrave PeeVVees lose to Goderich, beat Walton
The Belgrave PeeWee Boys were
trounced 19-5 by a visiting
Goderich team, July 6.
Goderich scored a huge nine runs
in the first then a walk to Jamie
McCallum in the bottom half, fol-
lowed by runs from Michael and
David McBurney cut the lead to
six.
Goderich tagged on another in

At its special board meeting,
Monday, July 5, the Huron County
Board of Education (HCBE)
acknowledged the resignation of
Shirley Weary, currently principal
at Bluewater Secondary School.

The very controversial issue of
the method by which schools raise
funds was addressed at the board of
education meeting on July 5.
It was recommended by Mr. Car-
roll that the schools be allowed to
use lotteries, games of chance and
"lucky draw" tickets to raise funds.
There is presently a policy in
place that does not permit this
involvement.
Several members of the board
were strongly opposed to employ-
ing "gambling" devices for school
purposes. Trustee Norman Pickell
said, it "promotes the idea of strik-
ing it rich by doing nothing. The
school board must set a minimum
standard of values." Mr Pickell said
such activities could lead students
to heavy gambling and law-break-
"Phonics are alive and well In
Huron County," said Huron County
Board of Education Trustee Nor-
man Pickell.
Mr. Pickell presented a report to
the board of education on July 5
stating the teachers are trying hard
to meet the needs of the children in
their class. The Early Years divi-
sion is taking a common sense
approach and are trying to fmd the
right balance of teaching methods.
The Huron-Perth RCSS board
and the public school board have
approved the integration of bus
grave. The third inning saw more
of the same with Goderich adding
another four, though Jamie McCal-
lum did cross the plate for Bel-
grave.
Goderich repeated their third
inning with four runs scoring while
Belgrave was shut out once again.
In the fifth the visitors increased
the lead by one which was can-
a transfer to the principalship at
F.E. Madill Secondary School in
Wingham, effective Sept. 1. In her
letter of resignation, she indicated
"The students, staff and community
of that school deserve a principal
who is prepared to make a
ing because of an addiction. -
Other members expressed the
opinion that this could not be com-
pared to "big league gambling".
Trustee Bob Burton stated, "The
problems with gambling in Ontario
could not be compared to this
issue." Trustee Burton said, "such a
fundraising activity could get the
students to work together instead of
expecting to have money handed to
them for their activities."
Morris Trustee Doug Garniss
opposed the suggested change of
policy while John Jewitt, trustee for
Hullett township, supported the
amendment.
The motion was defeated by the
board with an eight to six count.
Schools in Huron County will not

routes.
There will now be one bus route
for Hullett Township, as reported at
the HCBE meeting on July 5.

Restructuring funds in the

celled when Michael McBurney

On July 9 it was turnabout when
Belgrave travelled to Walton and
downed the home team 15-9.
McCallum and Michael McBur-
ney scored two in the first, while
Walton remained scoreless. Marc

ance in the second as Walton got

commitment for a minimum three-
year period in order to effect
appropriate change within the
school. I am not prepared to make
that commitment."
As a result of this resignation,
Director-Designate Paul Carroll has
given reconsideration to each of the
secondary school transfers
previously determined. In the
organization plans, Joe Wooden,
presently at South Huron District
High School was to assume duties
at Bluewater Secondary School and
Herb Murphy, presently at F.E.
Madill Secondary School was to
assume duties at South Huron
District High School.
The timing of the resignation in
conjunction with other matters with
a potential impact on staffing,
including the Social Contract Act,
A homer by McCallum, followed
by the McBurneys scoring gave the
visitors a healthy lead, especially
after shutting down the home team
in the third.
The same trio was responsible for
the runs in the fourth, while Walton
put a little heat on, scoring three.
Then it was even more nerve
wracking when Walton shut out
Belgrave in the fifth then closed the
lead to the decision to delay the
transfers. In a statement to the
board, Paul Carroll stated it would
be inappropriate to assign a school
principal to a large secondary
school for three to four months in
view of other events unfolding and
the possibility of other staff
changes before the end of the
current year. It would be wiser to
put all secondary principal transfers
on hold until Jan. 1.
Shirley Weary will continue her
duties at Bluewater Secondary
School, a 12-month school
operation, the next four months
from July through October, at
which time her resignation will
become effective. She was the
founding principal at Bluewater
Secondary School which opened as
a special school for Young
Offenders in September 1986.
gap by one more in their half of the
inning.
However, five runs in the sixth
launched the visitors well in front
again. Crossing the plate were
Michael Sanders, McCallum, both
McBurneys, which included a
homerun by David and Kevin
Campbell.
Though Walton came back in
their half of the seventh with three
runs McCallum had tagged on yet
another for the visitors in the top
half giving them a comfortable fin-
ish.
