Blyth Atoms win 2, lose 1
Brussels Squirts hosted a short-
handed Belgrave team on July 6
and came away with a narrow two-
point win after four innings.
Brussels took the lead in the first
after pitcher Terry Nichol stole sec-
ond then came home on an over-
throw.
Belgrave tied it in the second
when Rob McGee homered, but
Brussels bounced ahead again in
the home half when Mike Cooper
singled home Paul Albers.
McGee got his second homerun
in the third, a two-run shot that
brought in pitcher Tom Pfeiffer.
Then Ryan Fear doubled to score
Matt Cameron giving Belgrave the
lead.
Bottom of the third, however,
saw Brussels goring ahead once
again when Jason Armstrong
crossed the plate on a fielder's
choice by Nichol. Tyler Bragg fol-
lowed with a two run single that
scored Joshua Gropp and Nathan
Garland.
Nichol pitched a shut-out fourth,
holding the visitors to four runs,
then Patrick Gilkes knocked in
Armstrong for a total of six Brus-
sels runs to end the game.
Both pitchers did a great job with
Pfeiffer striking out seven and
Nichol, eight.
On June 22, the Blyth Atoms
soccer team travelled to Wingham
for their first meeting of the season.
Blyth scored two goals in the
first half on identical plays.
Teague Onn scored both goals with
Dave Ansley, Elisha Courtney and
Jeremy VanAmersfoort each
getting assists.
The second half began with Blyth
extending their lead to 3-1 as
Ansley scored on a pass from Onn,
Elisha and Nick Courtney.
However, Wingham came back
with a vengeance, scoring four
unanswered goals to win the game
5-3.
On June 29, Blyth played host to
the Lucknow Mustangs. Goalie
Peter Nonkes recorded a shutout as
Blyth won 3-0 with many different
players contributing to the win.,
Tigers
tie
Rangers
Monday night in Zurich the
Tigers came from behind to tie the
Rangers 8-8.
Brussels opened a four-run first
inning lead only to see Zurich
rebound with five runs in the
second, and three more in the third
for an 8-5 lead after three innings.
The Tigers scored once in the
fourth, then tied the game in the
fifth when Gary Pipe singled home
Doug Shaw, then stole home base
for the tying run.
Mike Watson pitched into the
third inning before being relieved
by Todd Uhrig.
Thursday night in Bayfield, the
Tigers mercied the Thunder 13-0.
Brussels scored three runs in the
first, without getting a hit, added
five more in the second, then
completed the rout with one in the
fourth and four in the fifth.
Doug Conley went the distance
pitching a four hitter while striking
out nine, including six in a row.
Uhrig cleared the centerfield
fence with a three-run homer in the
second while Conley batted four
for four at the plate.
The Tigers played a double-
header Sunday night hosting
Francistown at 7:30 p.m. before
meeting the Bulldogs at 9 p.m.
As well, Brussels has several
games to be rescheduled including
home games versus Blyth
Soundproof, Bulldogs and C4th
Coops Sports.
Mosquitoes
hang on
to win
The Brussels Mosquito soccer
team managed to hang on and beat
Elma 3-2 at a game at Newry on
July 7. Brussels was able to come
away with a win after dropping the
last two games, losing 5-0 to
Listowel and 7-2 to Drayton.
Brussels opened the scoring but
Elma came back and at the half
were one up. Trevor Wilson,
Gerald Bowles and Jillian Houston
scored for Brussels. Terry Nichol
and Stephen Oldfield played strong
two-way games for Brussels. Karla
Hunt from Elma provided the spark
for her team. Matthew Synder of
Brussels was loaned to Elma and he
provided strong goal tending.
Kevin Mutter was in goal for
Brussels.
The next game is on July 14 at
Listowel where Brussels plays
against Elmira.
VanAmersfoort scored all three
goals with assists going to E.
Courtney, Joy Cullen, John George
and Liz Sauve.
On July 6, the team hosted
Wingham in a rematch of the game
two weeks earlier.
This time Blyth played well for
the whole game, allowing Nonkes
to earn his second straight shut out.
The first goal was scored by
VanAmersfoort on a pass from
Ansley and Onn. Play stayed in the
Wingham end for most of the first
half as Blyth had many good
scoring opportunities. Blyth's next
goal was called back because of an
offside, but a few minutes later
Ansley scored a goal assisted by E.
Courtney. Immediately following
the kickoff, Ansley passed the ball
to VanAmersfoort, who scored his
second goal of the game.
In the second half
VanAmersfoort completed his hat
trick as he netted a pass form
Darwin Buffinga to finalize the
score at 4-0 for Blyth.
