MVCA hosts
Bluegrass
gathering
The Maitland Valley Conserva-
tion Authority is pleased to be
hosting the first annual Bluegrass
Gathering at Falls Reserve
Conservation Area on July 2, 3 and
4. This event promises to be fun for
the whole family.
The Bluegrass Gathering will be
held in the day use area of the park,
centered around the picnic shelter.
The Bluegrass Travellers will be
featured performers, while other
musicians are welcome to partici-
pate. Both pickers and listeners are
sure to enjoy the festivities.
Performances begin on Friday
evening and continue on Saturday
and Sunday afternoons starting at
1:00. Day use admission to the
Falls Reserve Conservation Area is
$4 per vehicle. The park snack bar
will be open.
Falls Reserve Conservation Area
is located at Benmiller, 10 minutes
from Goderich on County Road 31.
The 192 hectare park features 150
campsites, group camping, and a
day use picnic area all in a
beautiful natural setting.
The Ontario Stockyards in
Toronto will close on December 31
the Minister of Agriculture Elmer
Buchanan announced on Thursday,
June 17. He said that the land
would be leased to the private
sector. A Livestock Industry Trust
Fund will be created from the
proceeds of the lease and it will
benefit livestock producers.
Paul Klopp, MPP for Huron and
Parliamentary Assistant to the
Minister said, "After a decade of
declining volumes of animals
handled at the Toronto yard and
several studies it was time to make
the decision to close the yard.
Tough decisions are not pleasant or
popular but the taxpayer cannot
continue to foot the bill for the
yards. In Huron County we are
fortunate to have an excellent
livestock market at Brussels."
There are total of 50 community
sales barns around the province
which provide live auction sales.
The Toronto stockyards has lost
money every year since 1981
except one year in 1989. Between
1982 and 1992, total volumes of
livestock sold at the Toronto
stockyards fell from 672,000 head
to 265,000 head per year a drop of
61 per cent. The province has had
to provide money to keep the yards
operating. It has received grants
from the Ministry of Agriculture
and Food.
In January, 1992, a revitalized
stockyard Board was asked to
develop a plan for down-sizing and
revitalizing the yards. The proposal
was to lease land to a private
company and consolidate the yards.
This option would have cost $2.6
million and was determined not to
be viable.
The stockyards in Toronto has
the largest market for sheep and
lambs, but even the numbers sold
there have declined since 1989
while the number of sheep and
lambs in Ontario has gone up. The
Ministry will work with sheep
producers to follow-up suggestions
for alternate marketing strategies.
The majority of lamb sold through
the Toronto yards is processed
outside of Toronto.
