THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30, 1993. • • "/' •2'.•22,7' Grey Central- School- Valedictorian honours Grey graduates By Joanne Van Keulen Here I am just one student among our class of 25, yet I have been chosen to speak on behalf of our grade eight graduating class of "93". I am honoured to simply be part of this remarkable group of graduates. This was a truly special class of students; an outstanding collection of young people with talent, drive and a co-operative spirit. It's hard to believe that after nine years this day has finally come. We've built the foundation of our lives and future education. Of the 25 students in our class, 18 have been at Grey Central since kindergarten when we marched in here not knowing what to expect. In kindergarten we were greeted by our teacher Mrs. Whitmore, who helped us learn the alphabet, colours and numbers. She was always there when we needed some one to help us tie our shoes, zip up our jackets and even wipe our noses! Little did we know that as we moved on things were going to get harder. In grade one with our teacher Mrs. Richmond we started to print, read, add and subtract. I guess everything went alright and the words "that's mine!" began to wear off. On we went to grade two with Mrs. Martin. Expressive speaking, spelling, problem solving and -research were some topics of study. We looked forward to receiving certificates with smelly stickers for a job well done. By the end of grade two we had the school thing down pat but I think the thing we were most concerned about was getting our two front teeth back. Now on to grade three where we were the big kids of the primary hall. Here with our teacher Mrs. Starkey we learned new things such as calculations, multiplying and dividing. We had a dickens of a time memorizing 'Twas the Night Before Christmas". How many of you can remember the rest? We began to write and even started to parlez vous francais with Madame Colquhoun. At this time we were greeted by two new students Anita Everett and Marion Haller, who were a great addition to our class. Now we reached grade four in the senior hall where we found ourselves looking up at everyone again. This year was different though because we were split into a three/four and a four/five class. The three/four class was taught by Mr. Perrie and the four/five class was taught by Mrs. Bailey and Mrs. Colquhoun. "Oh joy, oh bliss," as Mrs. C. would put it. We did fractions and kept on developing our skills in all areas and again were greeted by another new student, Ulrich Hammel. We suffered through a divided year and were happy to be reunited - in grade five with our teachers Mrs. Bailey and Mrs. Gillies. Of course - another student entered our class, Eliane Affolter with her excellent athletic abilities. On rolled grade six with Miss Doig where we learned about our values, influences and peers with Constable Marshall. We wrote to penpals in Michigan, whom we visited at the end of the year and we began to show maturity as we started growing up. Low and behold another student came into our class, Krista Hunter, who brightened up the classroom with her cheerful- ness. Grade seven. Here once again our teacher was Mrs.Whitmore. She had a beautiful singing voice which could be used for other things too. We began to go to F. E. Madill high school for family studies with Mrs. Plaetzer, who was later replaced by Mrs. Kealen and Industrial.Arts with Mr. Boyer. They tried to teach us to be good home makers and handy men or women and believe it or not we came back with all our fingers! Near the end of the year two more students came, Sarah Roberts and Melanie Mayne, who were a pleasure to have join our class. The highlight of grade seven was our class trip to Quebec City for a week learning about the French culture and everyone had a great time. Now to grade eight, our last year at Grey and a most memorable one. Preparing ourselves for high school was our main goal this year and finding out if those terrible stories about Mr. Colquhoun were true. The homework piled up, compositions to be completed, assignments due. We wondered if it could get any worse than this. But then we started to realize there is more to life than fun and games. We figured out that things cosi money. In order to get money you need a job and in order to get a job you need an education. Without the teachers at Grey their support, skills and encouragement, we wouldn't be where we are today. There will always be a place in our hearts for Grey Central. We'll remember the friends we met and the friends we said goodbye to. Years from now we'll be able to look at our class pictures and think, was that really me? Or never forget how red Mr. Colquhoun's face Continued on page 20 JOANNE VAN KEULEN , - ,,,,, ... ,. v R.R. #3, , * FRANK Brussels CONGRATULATIONS from Frank WORKMAN and Kathy ELECTRIC GRADS! 887-6867 ; .
