THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30, 1993. East Wawanosh Public School- Valedictorian recalls early years at EWPS By Becky Van Camp Welcome to the grade eight graduation awards ceremony. Thank you all for coming. The graduates you see before you are not the small unschooled students who left for kindergarten nine years ago. We have improved and matured: our opinions and ideas on life have broadened. But what were we really like. Mrs. Hessels would say we were a sweet and quiet class — well, more or less. She was our first school teacher and her smile was a radiant welcome to the classroom. Thank goodness for it too, because for some people like myself this school routine was a bit scary. A couple of weeks ago we heard a tape we made then. We all covered our faces when we heard our names but as soon as a small boy started talking about farming procedures we knew it had to be Vaughn. And someone came on singing her favourite song, none other than Kendra Hopper. Most of us, like Heather and Tracy were just proud to announce they had kittens and a rabbit. If you asked the class about their best memory from kindergarten most would say the house centre in the corner of the classroom. What could be more exciting than dressing up and playing house with all your friends? There was a stove and pots and pans, but I notice now they have eggs in an egg carton, and McDonald's clothes. These things always come after we have left. As our kindergarten year ended we prepared for kindergarten graduation. The theme was Peter Rabbit. After the play we all got diplomas and a special hand shake from Mrs. Brydges, our future grade one teacher. Mrs. Brydges was teaching grade one when we came and she is still teaching it today. She taught us two of the most important skills a student needs to succeed — reading and writing. I am sure she went home after a day with us and pulled out a few hairs in despair, but she succeeded. We went on some interesting field trips in grade one like the Brussels apple orchard we picked our own apples, and the Goderich Zehrs for a tour where we met Mrs. Brydges's husband, then on to McDonald's where we watched our favourite food being made. Soon grade one was over and the summer months were upon us. Even sooner it was time to go back to school, but this time, Mrs. Wilson was very new to East Wawanosh and so was Victor Buchanan, a city boy from Brampton. But back to Mrs. Wilson, who taught grade two for one year, then taught kindergarten. Were we really that bad, Mrs. Wilson? Mrs. Wilson was a good, kind teacher who taught in a variety of ways. What I, and the kids on bus four will remember most about grade two is the bus accident we were in. The story began at my stop while the bus was backing into my laneway. A small green car came over the hill and tried to stop. The driver slammed on the brakes but the car couldn't stop on the icy road and slid into the bus. No one was seriously injured, but we were all shaken up. Grade three started much the same way until I walked in the door and saw our teacher. No he wasn't an alien, but a man? Mr. Fisher was a very interesting person and so was his class. Every week he had a draw for neat stuff he would buy. He gave us Friday afternoons to work on "Personal Projects" and Mr. Fisher also told very interesting stories. The new newcomers to the class, Melissa Snowden and Kristi Procter, went as quickly as they came but not very far — just -down the hall with some others to Mr. Kerr's cla-ss because of an overcrowded grade three class. The next fall all of us were together in grade four except for four boys who stayed with Mr. Fisher (Dean Walker and David McBurney and two others) that year. Yet another new face joined the class, Jo Ann Mason. Our new teacher was another man, Mr. Kerr who was very strict but he gave you a lot of confidence in yourself. If Mr. Kerr thought you could do it, you could do it. We had Mr. Kerr for grade five but some of our class went in with Ms Thorpe. In that class was another new comer, Rolf Fischknecht. Although he could not speak English, Chris and Brad didn't mind giving him a few special words. But back in grade four/five we did all kinds of things. Mr. Kerr was always reading us a new book by his favourite authors. We studied sandwiches and took a trip to Zehrs Bakery to see how bread was baked. As grade five ended a certain sense of seniority entered our minds, and it has grown since. It will probably be squished quite quickly next year though. Grade six came quickly, bring- ing with it Leanne Himmelman. I heard from other students how much fun our new teacher Ms Thorpe was and as soon as we stepped in her classroom we could feel it. Ms Thorpe was bubbly but also very knowledgeable. We were Continued on page 20 BECKY VAN CAMP CONGRATULATIONS GRADS! Wheeler Auto Glass Div.of Wheeler Bus Lines Inc.
