This motif is refeated with a circle in the lobby window. The sites are also situated differ- ently. While Huronlea is a long, winding building situated close to the road, Huronview faces the high- way from a much larger distance. The end result is that Huronlea, the smaller of the two homes, has a more intimate feel, says Ms Lamb while Huronview is more spacious and any. Nothing of the old Huronview architecture is in the new homes, says Ms Lamb. "That home was very typical of the times when it was built. It's very institutional." In contrast the new structures are more like home. "They're peaceful. There's a relaxed sense." Certainly the decorated walls, colorful carpet and matching furni- ture add to the home feel. The end result is that architec- turally, the buildings aren't a monu- ment to the architect, but are structures for the people. Landscape has rural feeling For convenience The Huronlea lobby was designed as an oversized sitting room, complete with Tuck Shop and an excellent view of the outdoors. PAGE 7. By Janice Becker When the design for a new pro- ject is chosen, such as Huronview and Huronlea, much more is con- sidered than just the building. Mr. Koudy explained that land- scaping plays an integral part in the complete look and feel of a seniors' home. Many aspects must be taken into consideration when planning the walkways and gardens. Chief landscape architect for the projects, Ron Koudy of Ron Koudy Landscape Architecture Inc., in London, says the environment into which the building is going, must be considered. In reference to both local homes, the setting is rural so the feeling of a country manor was the objective. The elderly enjoy the social, aspects of a seniors' home and they like to cluster in areas of activity, he said. To suit these needs, court- yards were included to provide an area for several activities. Mr. Koudy said "happy event areas" are important as a place to celebrate with relatives. Sandboxes were placed in the courtyard so that family would feel comfortable bringing small children to visit. Private rooms were included so that the family may also grieve together. In the planning of the gardens, says Mr. Koudy, the residents tend to feel the most comfortable with plants that were in abundance dur- ing their youth. For this reason, there was extensive use of perenni- als and roses. The forsythia is a favorite of many. Huronlea and Huronview both contain an Alzheimer wing, required special consideration.
