The planning of Huronview By Don Jackson The establishing of the new Huronview and Huronlea buildings in Huron County was a decision that involved a great deal of planning involving many people. Administrator of the two buildings, Wayne Lester, said that initially renovations were being considered for the old Huronview building. The old building was built in three stages. After the initial construction in 1953/54 there were two additions built. The first was in 1961 and the second was in 1967. Lester said that at the time renovations were being discussed, a new provincial building code came into effect. To get the building up to the standards of the new code would have been "an extremely high cost," he said. Since the building was funded partially by the province, its support was important. "The province decided they wouldn't spend money to renovate the old buildings," he explained. Lester said, "Since about 1987, the Seniors Care Facility Committee (SCFC) was established in conjunction with the County of Huron and the Province of Ontario." The committee included officials from the county, as well as municipal government and representatives, care givers and consumers of senior services. The 18 person committee submitted a 108 page report which studied the represent seniors' care situation in Huron County and made recommendations for the future of seniors care in the county. In the report are a series of surveys given out to a variety of different groups. Data was taken from hospitals, care service providers, Huronview staff, the general public, church groups, seniors' groups, Huronview residents and Huron County Housing Authority residents. The questionnaire consisted of seven questions which were: 1) What is the most desirable size of a home for the aged? 2) What do you perceive to be the advantages of centralized versus decentralized centres? 3) Briefly describe the type of facility(s) you feel could most adequately provide for seniors in your community...in this county? 4) What type of facility should be provided for victims of a) Alzheimer's? b) Other geriatric diseases? 5) Please identify the gaps you see in today's services to the elderly in Huron County? 6) What role should Huronview play? The seventh question was only asked of Seniors. It asked whether they would prefer private or semi- private rooms, shared or ensuite bathroom facilities and the option to have televisions and telephones in their rooms. After reviewing 288 responses, the SCFC made a series of recommendations. The summary of their report, which was completed in June 1988, recommended that a "one story complex of 160 (beds) be constructed on the Huronview sight..." An eighty bed satellite home in the northern part of Huron County was also recommended and, if need arises, it was recommended a third home be built in the southern part of the county. It was suggested that each home provide certain facilities and services. These are: a) a choice of private or semi- private rooms with toilet and sink ensuite and optional television and telephone; b) an Alzheimer's unit with specially trained staff and adjoining therapeutic garden; c) a day care service; Continued on page 5 Welcome and Congratulations on your Grand Opening Huronlea FARM SUPPLY LTD WALTON 887 6365 Making life easier Many innovative techniques have been incorporated into the new facilities including new bathtubs which can be elevated.
