THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23, 1993. PAGE 21.
CURB grants now available
Health Minister Ruth Grier
announced June 9 the first step in
the development of a regional
planning model for south-western
Ontario.
A regional planning steering
committee has begun work already
on the planning model and will
report back to the minister by the
end of September.
The committee will be making
recommendations on how district
health councils in the region can
come together to plan, what kinds
of planning and decision making
will be involved, and the steps
needed to put this model in place.
"The people of southwestern
Ontario will benefit when health
care planning is closer to the
community," Mrs. Grier said. "The
province will benefit when this
planning model is eventually
adopted in the rest of Ontario."

on the memorial stand were in
memory of Norman Cartwright,
placed by his wife Florence and
family.
Holy Communion was held. A
congregational meeting followed
the service to hear the building
committee report.
Next Sunday there will be a guest
speaker, Mrs. Elly Van Bergen of
Exeter United Church.
Choir practice is Sunday at 10:15

Mallett of Palmerston on Saturday.
This idea of strengthening
regional planning is one of the
recommendations from the 1991
report by the Comprehensive
Health System Planning Conunis-
sion for London and the Southwest
Region.
However, instead of creating new
bodies at the regional level, as the
commission recommended, the
committee will be seeking ways to
emphasize the planning role of
district health councils.
Steering committee chairman
Douglas Lawson is one of three
former Southwest commission
members participating.
The committee is also composed
of representatives of district health
councils in southwestern Ontario,
the Association of District Health
Councils of Ontario, health care
providers, academics and the
public.

Farmers and homeowners can
now receive grant assistance to
help clean up sources of water
pollution. Under the CURB
Program (Clean Up Rural
Beaches), grants are available to
construct manure storages, to fence
livestock out of watercourses, to
install milkhouse washwater
disposal systems, and to repair
private septic systems.
The CURB Program is designed
to help clean up sources of bacteria
and phosphorus pollution that
affect water quality in the Maitland,
Nine Mile and Eighteen Mile
Rivers. To date, over $1 million in
grants have been issued to farmers
and landowners for the completion
of about 200 projects. This
voluntary program is funded by the
Ministry of the Environment and
Energy and the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority (MVCA).
Financial assistance is limited to
applicants who are polluting
surface waters. Proposed projects
with the greatest potential for
reducing pollution will be
considered first for funding.
The CURB Program offers 50
per cent grants up to $2,000 to
repair or replace a septic system
that is polluting a nearby
watercourse. Farmers can receive a
75 per cent grant up to a total of
$10,000 to pay for costs of fencing
livestock out of watercourses.
Grants are also available for the
construction of a crossing and an
alternate water source as part of a
fencing project. Manure storages
are eligible for a 50 per cent grant
up to $12,000. The grant for
milkhouse washwater disposal
systems is 50 per cent, with a
maximum grant of $5,000.
