Wilford. Mr. Wilford is remembered for his unique style that was used to promote the rutabaga business of Mr. Dougherty. With Mr. Dougherty, he set up a Blyth Trade Fair in 1953, in the plant's storage buildings. to entice the people to the exhibition, the two men provided transportation to the plant from uptown as well as supplying the visitors with ice cream and other refreshments. In that same year, Mr. Wilford displayed the rutabagas at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. To move away from the notion of turnips that were used for cattle feed Mr.Wilford decided to use the name rutabaga or vitabaga. At their display they offered the customers a taste of rutabaga juice and diced rutabaga. As another means of promotion, rutabagas were given to all Mem- bers of Parliament in Ottawa and to the Queen. Mr. Wilford won himself the title of "Rutabaga King" by dressing in a robe and crown for all media gatherings. At the line The first annual Rutabuggy contest held at last years Rutabaga Festival was a big hit with the kids. Get your soap box running
