Everyone should be turning up in
Blyth this weekend as the village
hosts its fourth annual Rutabaga
Festival.
Beginning on Saturday this year,
there will be a Penny Sale at the
Legion Hall starting at 9, while the
judging of the baking contest will
take place at 10 at Blyth Memorial
Hall.
The parade will begin at 11,
departing appropriately from Hub-
bard's Rutabaga Factory. Featured
this year is the Metro Toronto
Police Winged Wheels Motorcycle
Precision Team, the Mocha Scooter
Unit, Mocha Temple Desert Rats,
Mocha Temple Hillbillies, Brussels
Legion Pipe Band, Clinton Legion
Pipe Band, Mocha Motor Corps,

two new entries to the parade —
the Seaforth District High School
Marching Band and Classic Cars.
At 12:30 p.m. The Metro Toronto
Police Winged Wheels Motorcycle
Precision team will perform after
which they will set up at the Lions
Park to visit with spectators.

Blyth is the source for tons of
rutabaga that is shipped across
Canada and the United States every
year.
The Rutabaga Agricultural Fair
first began 39 years ago, a forerun-
ner to the present day festival.
Since 1963, George Hubbard has
operated a thriving Rutabaga facto-
barrel fights.
Volunteers from Blyth Festival
will be helping with picnic games
such as bag races and face painting.
From 5 to 7 the Shriner's will be
frying fish, then the Lions 50s, 60's
Dance, featuring Eddie and the
Edsels begins at 9.
On Sunday, the fishing derby
will once again be held at Radford's
Pond on Highway 4, south of
Blyth.
ry which was purchased from the
late Russell Dougherty. Mr.
Dougherty began the industry in
1939.
By 1951, Mr. Dougherty had rev-
olutionized the industry by invent-
ing the seeder that eliminated the
over planting of seeds.
With the help of A.H. Wilford,
the pair became widely known for
their publicity schemes to promote
the rutabaga.
At that time the United States,
Leamington and Toronto was the
main market for the vegetable.
One of their more infamous
schemes was the presentation of
rutabagas to ever Member of Par-
liament in Ottawa and 50 lbs. to the
Queen.
The rutabaga is in the same fami-
ly as the turnip and tastes like a
cross between a turnip and cabbage
though it is sweeter. The vegetable
can be cooked or sliced raw into a
salad.
Also referred to as the Swedish
turnip, most Ontario growers pro-
duce the "Laurentian variety which
was developed by Prof. Raymond
at Macdonald College in Guelph in
the early 1940.
