This past week, Brussels Squirts
learned you win some, you lose
some as they were defeated by
Winthrop, June 15 then copped a
victory in Belgrave on Thursday.
Winthrop was the host team for
the first game, but demonstrated lit-
tle hospitality as they defeated the
visitors 13-11.
Nathan Conley pitched a solid
game for the Brussels team.
After hits by Paul Albers and
Nathan Garland and walks to Con-
ley and Joshua Gropp to begin the
game, followed by a shutout home
half, Brussels led by two.
On June 12, the Blyth Mosquito
team took part in the Legion soccer
tournament in Clinton. The first
game would decide which division
they would be in.
They played a very offensive
game and easily placed in the A
division with a 9-0 win. Goal
scorers were Michael Ansley, Jeff
Cowan and Michael Courtney, who
each scored twice, Kelly Boven,
Zeb Irving, and Christina Black.
Assists went to Courtney, one April
Van Amersfoort, two, Boven, one,

Palmerston
Brussels Mosquito soccer team
downed the visiting Palmerston
team 2-0 on Wednesday night at
the Brussels school field. After a
scoreless first half Brussels went
ahead with a penalty kick by
Trevor Wilson. Terry Nichol
provided the insurance goal.
The Brussels team was able to
bounce back after dropping three
games at the Clinton Legion
Tournament on Saturday, June 12.
The Brussels 11 played the three
games with only one spare, Daryl
Houston, a Brussels Atom player,
but were not able to come away
with a win. They dropped a close 3-
2 game to Clinton but were out-
played by both Blyth and Seaforth.
Bronwyn Dunbar continued her
outstanding work on defense.
Kevin Mutter provided some solid
goal tending.
The Brussels team is 2-2 in
league play.
However, it was turn about for
the next two innings with Brussels
unable to add to the score, while
the hosts notched five.
Despite three hits by Richard
Armstrong, Conley, and Garland
and a walk to Jason Armstrong in
the fourth, the visitors were unable
to score and Winthrop added two
more.
The spark was lit in the fifth,
aided by homeruns from Trevor
Wilson and Michael Carriere. Brus-
sels had to end the inning with the
bases loaded and none out, howev-
er, as a new ruling allows only
Ansley, three, Cowan, two and
Joey Schmidt, one.
The competition became tougher
in the A division. They met up
against a good Lucknow team with
good scoring chances for both
teams. Blyth scored first from a
free kick by Jeff Cowan.
Ansley assisted. Blyth notched
another goal as Cowan scored from
a penalty shot. Lucknow came back
strong with three goals to win 3-2.
Blyth's third game was against
Goderich. Blyth had a few good
scoring chances but couldn't get
past the strong opposition. They
lost 5-0.
The Blyth team had a good day
and all players played well.
The Goderich McDonalds
Mosquito team came to Belgrave to
play Blyth June 14.
Both teams displayed good
soccer skills. With play going back
and forth the score remained 0-0
after the first half. With some
encouragement at half time Blyth
worked very hard in the second
half. Boven scored on the rebound
of his own penalty shot. Goderich
came right back to tie the game
with a rebound off the post.
Goderich scored again to take the
lead. Blyth was determined and
fought back to tie the game 2-2.
Cowan made a throw in and
Irving, Van Amersfoort, and
Courtney maneuvered the ball to
set up Ansley.
This was the best game played by
the Blyth team and Jeremy Van
Amersfoort came up with very
good goal tending.
Blyth travelled to Goderich to
play the Lions.
The Goderich team handed the

seven runs per inning.
In the home half, a Winthrop
homer broke the tie.
One run scored off hits by Gar-
land, Jason Armstrong and Gropp
in the third, but Winthrop took a
strong lead again with three more
crossing the plate in the bottom
half.
Carriere hit his second homerun
of the game in the seventh, but it
wasn't enough to close the gap.
In Belgrave what started as a
walk-a-thon ended as a pitching
duel.
Brussels started with a run in the
first, but gave up six to the home
team.
In the second, however, another"
player was left on with two out
after Brussels took the lead with
seven runs. Pitcher Terry Nichol,
who relieved Garland after one and
two-thirds, pitched three shut out
innings before allowing a home run
off Robbie McGee in the fifth.
The Belgrave pitcher, who
replaced McGee in the second
inning also pitched three shutouts,
before allowing two runs in the
sixth.
Nichol, who had a total of nine
strikeouts over four and a third
innings, shut them down in the
bottom half.

two games recently coming away
with a win and a loss.
On June 14, they hosted Seaforth
and sent the visitors home with a
loss of 16-5.
First inning runs were scored by
Jeremy Campbell, Jamie McCal-
lum, David McBumey.
The second inning was Victor
Buchanan, Marc Alexander,
Michael Marks, Robbie McGee,
Campbell, McCallum and David
McBumey.

were Kevin Campbell, Buchanan,
Alexander, McGee, Dean Walker
and McCallum.
It was a great game, one that was
well-played with a solid team
effort.
The team didn't fare as well when
they travelled to Seaforth losing to
the home team by two.
Belgrave scored including a
homerun in the first by Walker.
