It was close but the North's catcher Stephen Todd didn't get the runner out at home. The South went on to win the game. Winthrop was the host team for the first game, but demonstrated lit- tle hospitality as they defeated the visitors 13-11. Nathan Conley pitched a solid game for the Brussels team. After hits by Paul Albers and Nathan Garland and walks to Con- ley and Joshua Gropp to begin the game, followed by a shutout home half, Brussels led by two. On June 12, the Blyth Mosquito team took part in the Legion soccer tournament in Clinton. The first game would decide which division they would be in. They played a very offensive game and easily placed in the A division with a 9-0 win. Goal scorers were Michael Ansley, Jeff Cowan and Michael Courtney, who each scored twice, Kelly Boven, Zeb Irving, and Christina Black. Assists went to Courtney, one April Van Amersfoort, two, Boven, one, Brussels team downs Palmerston Brussels Mosquito soccer team downed the visiting Palmerston team 2-0 on Wednesday night at the Brussels school field. After a scoreless first half Brussels went ahead with a penalty kick by Trevor Wilson. Terry Nichol provided the insurance goal. The Brussels team was able to bounce back after dropping three games at the Clinton Legion Tournament on Saturday, June 12. The Brussels 11 played the three games with only one spare, Daryl Houston, a Brussels Atom player, but were not able to come away with a win. They dropped a close 3- 2 game to Clinton but were out- played by both Blyth and Seaforth. Bronwyn Dunbar continued her outstanding work on defense. Kevin Mutter provided some solid goal tending. The Brussels team is 2-2 in league play. However, it was turn about for the next two innings with Brussels unable to add to the score, while the hosts notched five. Despite three hits by Richard Armstrong, Conley, and Garland and a walk to Jason Armstrong in the fourth, the visitors were unable to score and Winthrop added two more. The spark was lit in the fifth, aided by homeruns from Trevor Wilson and Michael Carriere. Brus- sels had to end the inning with the bases loaded and none out, howev- er, as a new ruling allows only Ansley, three, Cowan, two and Joey Schmidt, one. The competition became tougher in the A division. They met up against a good Lucknow team with good scoring chances for both teams. Blyth scored first from a free kick by Jeff Cowan. Ansley assisted. Blyth notched another goal as Cowan scored from a penalty shot. Lucknow came back strong with three goals to win 3-2. Blyth's third game was against Goderich. Blyth had a few good scoring chances but couldn't get past the strong opposition. They lost 5-0. The Blyth team had a good day and all players played well. The Goderich McDonalds Mosquito team came to Belgrave to play Blyth June 14. Both teams displayed good soccer skills. With play going back and forth the score remained 0-0 after the first half. With some encouragement at half time Blyth worked very hard in the second half. Boven scored on the rebound of his own penalty shot. Goderich came right back to tie the game with a rebound off the post. Goderich scored again to take the lead. Blyth was determined and fought back to tie the game 2-2. Cowan made a throw in and Irving, Van Amersfoort, and Courtney maneuvered the ball to set up Ansley. This was the best game played by the Blyth team and Jeremy Van Amersfoort came up with very good goal tending. Blyth travelled to Goderich to play the Lions. The Goderich team handed the Continued on page 27 seven runs per inning. In the home half, a Winthrop homer broke the tie. One run scored off hits by Gar- land, Jason Armstrong and Gropp in the third, but Winthrop took a strong lead again with three more crossing the plate in the bottom half. Carriere hit his second homerun of the game in the seventh, but it wasn't enough to close the gap. In Belgrave what started as a walk-a-thon ended as a pitching duel. Brussels started with a run in the first, but gave up six to the home team. In the second, however, another" player was left on with two out after Brussels took the lead with seven runs. Pitcher Terry Nichol, who relieved Garland after one and two-thirds, pitched three shut out innings before allowing a home run off Robbie McGee in the fifth. The Belgrave pitcher, who replaced McGee in the second inning also pitched three shutouts, before allowing two runs in the sixth. Nichol, who had a total of nine strikeouts over four and a third innings, shut them down in the bottom half. Belgrave PeeWees beat Seaforth Belgrave Pee Wee boys played two games recently coming away with a win and a loss. On June 14, they hosted Seaforth and sent the visitors home with a loss of 16-5. First inning runs were scored by Jeremy Campbell, Jamie McCal- lum, David McBumey. The second inning was Victor Buchanan, Marc Alexander, Michael Marks, Robbie McGee, Campbell, McCallum and David McBumey. Crossing the plate in the third were Kevin Campbell, Buchanan, Alexander, McGee, Dean Walker and McCallum. It was a great game, one that was well-played with a solid team effort. The team didn't fare as well when they travelled to Seaforth losing to the home team by two. Belgrave scored including a homerun in the first by Walker.
