Rain doesn't ruin 'piggy day'
By Janice Becker
A new business has opened at
RR 2 Auburn.
Cedar Lane Design is an estab-
lishment that offers everything for
the interior designer from the actual
design work to the flooring and
appliances
Owners Sandra Harmer and Bob
Smyth are top designers that once
worked out of Toronto but they
decided to move the business to
West Wawanosh when Sandra
Harmer moved to the area a year
ago.
The partners rebuilt the old
slaughter house in St. Augustine.
While constructing a new build-
ing on the old foundation they tried
to maintain as much of the original
feel of the building as possible. The
old windlass still hangs on the wall.
The showroom combines their
upscale designs with the natural
landscape of the surroundings.

The Molesworth Women's Insti-
tute ladies attended the 90th

wich WI on Wednesday.
On Thursday they took a car tour
to the London/Simcoe area.
Cedar Lane Design specializes in
"space-planning and re-designing
either existing space or designing
new ones" says Sandra Harmer.
Her partner, Bob Smyth is a
designer, installer and builder. Mr.
Smyth spent time in the area as a
youth and recalls a relative taking a
cow to the slaughter house that
Cedar Lane now operates out of.
Though much of their work is
still done in the larger centers such
as Toronto, Ms Harmer feels that
the pleasure of country living
makes up for the time spent on the
road.
The partners say they are hoping
that the quality of work will attract
local customers.
Cedar Lane Design offers a
choice of two types of cabinetry, a
lower priced "builders" line as well
as an upscale line.
Cedar Lane Design opened on
June 4.

CEC-S
marks
silver
anniversary
1993 marks the 25th anniversary
of the Canada Employment Centre
for Students program. A quarter
century of development has
witnessed changes to the program,
but the premise of students helping
students to find summer
employment has stayed the same.
The Listowel Canada
Employment Centre (CEC-S) for
Students has a very special
anniversary celebration planned.
The Listowel Branch is not only
recognizing the programs 25
summers of service nationwide,
they are also proud to honour the
area communities for supporting
the student employment centre in
Listowel for the past 20 years.
On June 28, official Hire-A-
Student day, the Listowel CEC-S
will be hosting art anniversary bash
with dignitaries from the
surrounding area communities and
from the Canada Employment
Centre's Regional Headquarters.
An anniversary cake, squares,
coffee and soft drinks will be
served at the centre following a
brief presentation.
On June 28 from 12:00 p.m. until
12:30 p.m. in front of the Listowel
Canada Employment Centre, 210
Main Street, the presentation of
certificates of merit to area
communities will take place. From
12:30 until 2:00 p.m. there will be
an open house at the CEC-S. Old
scrap books, letters from past
supervisors and Student Placement
Officers will be available to browse
through.

grave Kinsmen's "Piggy Day" was
good. Kinsman Niel Edgar says
that a profit of $12,000 is anticipat-
ed with proceeds going towards the
arena debt.
A big chunk of that total came
from the piggy bank contest. Last
September, participants paid $3 for
a piggy bank which they "fed" until
this past Saturday. They then gave
the banks to the Kinsmen, who
returned $10, provided the bank
weighed more than two kilograms.
Of the 325 pigs sold, 180 were
returned.
Prize money was awarded to the
heaviest banks.
Top winners were: Trevor Beck,
$500, 18.850 kg.; Jack McPherson,
$300, 18.800 kg.;
Dcb Pheiffer, $200, 18.570 kg.
and Lloyd Michie, $100, 18.450
kg.
Mr. Edgar says the highest
amount of money in a bank was
$650 in dimes.
In weight, the coins totalled
6,500 pounds, which Mr. Edgar
says will fill three pick-up trucks
and take 125 hours to roll. That
task began on Saturday and is
expected to take until Thursday to
complete.
The barbecue and dance were
each well attended, though the
highlight of the day for the young
people, Mr. Edgar says, was the
greasy pig contest, the one area
where the weather may actually
have helped.
