Oliver! began its epoch-making run in London on June 30, 1960. The New York production opened on Dec. 27 of that year following tryouts in Los Angeles, San Francisco and 10 other cities. In the As The Grand Theatre's 1992-93 season draws to a close, a different sort of "play" shifts to the 'fore'- front at the theatre. The Grand Theatre with Canadian Interna- tional Group and Wood Gundy Inc. present the third Annual Ladies' Open on Wednesday, June 16, at the Greenhills Country Club in Lambeth. Presented as a fundraising event for The Grand Theatre, this tournament gets underway with a shot-gun start at 12 noon, continues with lunch 'on the run' and Administrative Director Lascelle Wingate announced June 1, the designation of the final matinee performance of Wingfield's Folly on Saturday, June 12, as PWYC (Pay-What-You-Can) performance. In making the announcement, Administrative Director Lascelle The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario (ACO) was founded in 1933 to preserve the best examples of Ontario's architecture and to protect places of natural beauty. Always short of funds, and faced with the near impossible task of preserving, or more correctly conserving, Ontario's architecture, the organization has of necessity paid little attention protecting places of natural beauty. It has concentrated on advocacy, research and educational programs of lecturers, walking tours, house tours, publications and workshops but has also provided loans to property owners and informed opinions on buildings through a professional board. It has occasionally intervened by purchasing a building. The ACO also operates an Advisory Board which is able to assist people in all aspects of restoration, preservation, conservation and repair of historic and old buildings. This Advisory Board can be contacted through any of the local branches. Some of the branches across the province are Ouinte Region, Port Hope, Heritage Cambridge, Brant County, North Waterloo Region, Oxford County, and Huron County. The Huron County Branch of the ACO was an outgrowth of the Save the Gaol Society. That group was formed in 1973 under the presidency of Joan van de Broeck to prevent the demolition of one of the walls of the historic Huron County Gaol in Goderich. In need of all the support it could get in that struggle it applied for membership in the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario. When the Ontario Heritage Act came into being, members from distribution of the 1963 Tony Awards, Lionel Bart took honours for the music and lyrics. The London production closed Sept. 9, 1966 after its 2,618th performance, making it the longest running musical of the British theatre to that date. Following a six month hiatus, the musical re- opened on May 1, 1967 to sell-out crowds. A long-running revival ,pc,,ed in London in 1977 and on Broa iway in 1984. concludes with a scrumptious dinner at the end of the day. One of the many highlights of the event will be the fabulous prize table — from which every golfer will win a gift. A grand array of goods and services has been donated by dozens of local businesses and individuals. A truly gifted golfer could be the lucky winner of a 1993 LMP Pontiac Sunbird, sponsored in partnership by Dale Intermediaries Ltd. and Guardian Insurance. The trick? Merely sinking a hole-in- one! In addition, every registrant Wingate commented, "We are adding this because of the numerous requests we have received, indicating the continued popularity of this relatively new programme." With a suggested minimum $5, all unsold seats remaining one hour both Bayfield and Goderich applied to their local councils for the establishment of LACAC's. Both centres were among the first in e province to establish Designated Heritage Districts. The Huron County Branch of the ACO has more recently been involved with tours, art contests, lectures, design workshops and assisting local LACAC's with appropriate solutions for work being proposed on heritage buildings. In future, the Branch hopes to organize tours of various historic homes and buildings throughout the county.
