`Celli House'
comes to Blyth
Colleen Curran, renowned
Canadian playwright and one of
Blyth's best loved writers, is back
in Huron County to work on Ceili
House, the colourful comedy that
opens the mainstage season on June
25.
Curran's previous Blyth plays
include Cake Walk, Local Talent,
and the sellout hit Miss Balmoral of
the Bayview.
Ceili House unfolds in the
country garden of a century home
outside a small town in Ontario.
Freya Brady is the young woman
recently hired as the curator in
charge of turning the old home into
a museum to honour the famous
Canadian novelist who once lived
there.
Her seemingly simple task is
turned into an hilarious
misadventure by a collection of
eccentric characters including an
opera singing gardener, a retired
librarian who is a self professed
druid, a meddling socialite, and a
businessman turned suitor.
Celli House is directed by
Patricia Vanstone with set design
by Stephen Degenstein and lighting
by Leslie Wilkinson.
The world premiere of Ceili
House features the return of Claire
Crawford, Laurel Paetz, Anne
Anglin and Kevin Bundy and the
first time on Blyth's stage for
Canadian film and stage actor
Michael McManus.
Tickets for the early shows are
selling well and should be reserved
now to avoid disappointment by
calling the Blyth Festival Box
Office at (519) 523-9300.

Six local women will be honored
for their volunteerism at the Volun-
teer Service Awards ceremony to
be held June 1 at the Marconi Club
in London.
Helen Gowing, Carol Irwin,
Carol McDonnell and Sheron
Stadelmann all of Blyth and Sheila
Richards of Brussels will be hon-
ored for their commitment to the
Blyth Centre for the Arts and Joan
Perrie of Walton for her contribu-
tions to the Blyth Festival Singers.
These women are among 245
volunteers from across Ontario to
be honored at the ceremony.
The event is jointly sponsored by
the Ministry of Citizenship and the
Ministry of Culture, Tourism and
Recreation. The Volunteer Service
Awards recognize five, 10 and 15
years of service by volunteers who
work for organizations related to
these ministries. The ceremony also
recognizes volunteers 18 years of
age or younger who have provided
service for at least two years. Vol-
unteers whose work has been
exemplary receive an Outstanding
Achievement Award.
"The province of Ontario would
like to shine the spotlight on volun-
teers for infusing communities with
some of their most human
attributes—caring, giving and
warmth," said Elaine Ziemba, Min-
ister of Citizenship.
"These volunteers deserve our
heartfelt tributes for the far-reach-
ing impact they have on our society
both economically and socially,"
said Anne Swarbrick, the Minister
of Culture, Tourism and Recre-
ation. "Without their efforts, many
people, organizations and commu-
nities could not survive."
