From the Minister 's Study
Recalling 10 years of joy and sorrow
vows. At death, I offer words of
comfort to families as we give them
back into God's hands.
What things have irritated you
the most?
People who have waved Bibles at
me while claiming that I am not
among 'the saved'; the misunder-
standing that I work only two hours
a week when people know full well
it is at least three hours counting
travel time; and myself whenever I
have become discouraged and lost
faith.
What does the future hold?
Early retirement, maybe.
Have you ever wanted to do
anything else? Be a lawyer?
Doctor? Sculptor? Geneticist?
Truck driver?
Oh yes, an actor. Did I happen to
mention that I am one of more than
100 local people whose hidden
talents are about to shine forth in
the Blyth and District Community
Play?
That sounds like a sneaky way of
plugging Many Hands the soon-to-
be smash Off-Broadway hit that
will run from June 8-19 at the
Hubbard Rutabaga Factory in
Blyth.
Come and see for yourself if I
may have missed my calling.
You will have this minister thing
to fall back on, of course.
You bet.
4 youths

church
Greeting guests and worshippers
at Blyth Christian Reformed
Church on Sunday, May 30 were
Ralph and Veronica DeVries.
The Pentecost service was a very
special celebration as four youth
publically professed their faith in
the Lord, becoming full members
of the church.
Joshua David Wesselink, infant
son of Dave and Joyce was
baptized into the church family.
Rev. Heersink delivered a
sermon on the Pentecost Theme —
the Holy Spirit, and how it can
work powerfully in a Christian's
life - and the activities of the
church. This message was based on
scripture readings from the book of
Acts where the actual descending
of the Holy Spirit first occurred.
In the evening church elder Mr.
Martin Wilts led the service as Rev.
Heersink was attending a special
worship service in Thombury.
Several songs from the New
Psalter Hymnal were sung in
joyous unison this Pentecost
Sunday.
Poaching goes
against our
nature!
Each year, many of our wild
animals are killed or captured
for profit. Birds, reptiles, and
amphibians are taken illegally
for trade. Black bears, deer,
and elk are slaughtered for
their parts. Please join us in
our fight to stop poaching. Call

By Rev. Randy Banks
I will soon be celebrating the
tenth anniversary of my ordination.
I recently conducted an interview
of myself to mark the occasion and
here are a few excerpts:
Why did you become a minister?
Everyone asks that. For three
square meals a day and no heavy
lifting, of course.
We'll come back to that one. Tell
me, what is it like working with
people?
Well being a 'people' myself, I
suppose that what I say and do
angers and frustrates some and
pleases other. My personality
undoubtedly resonates with some
and clashes with others. In the
same way, I find some people to be
generally kind, thoughtful, and
gentle while others are unkind,
irritating, and disruptive.
I can say with all sincerity,
however, that within the church I
have met some of the finest people
God has called into being.
Do some people expect the
minister to be a miracle worker?
The Apostle Paul said that he had
become all things to all people (I
Corinthians 9.22), bless his
misguided soul. Mostly, people
hope for the minister to be able to
preach thoughtful sermons, say
grace at church dinners, but above
all, to be one who listens, cares,
and empathizes.
Now, when they expect the
minister to satisfy everyone with
the hymn choices, then they are
looking for a miracle worker.
You have lived in church-
provided housing, referred to as
'the manse' . What has that been
like?
What can I say. I get to live in a
number of houses without ever
having to purchase one. I do
remember that, in one manse, the
maintenance expenditure for the
entire year was $4 (for a bag of
rock salt). In another manse, I had a
study that was so tiny. I had to step
outside of it in order to change my
thinking.
It is amazing, though. Every
house eventually became a home
and, in truth, the perfect manse
would bring together certain
features of each one.
Churches do not always have the
most reliable, up-to-date office
equipment. Would you agree?
In one congregation, I ran the
church bulletin through an old
Gestetner. By the time that machine
and I were through with each other
on Friday afternoons, the best place
to read the order of worship was on
the front of my shirt.
What is the greatest privilege of
being in ministry?
To be with people in their
moments of profoundest joy and
sorrow. At baptism, I hold them as
helpless infants in my arms. I
witness their solemn marriage
