Last winter, Huron County
became home, once again, to wild
turkeys - the first time the wild
birds had roamed these woodlands
since the beginning of the century.
A total of 25 birds were trapped
in several locations in central
Ontario and transferred to a pair of
sites in the northern part of the
County. At least six broods were
produced in the spring of 1992,
despite the cold wet nesting
conditions. As a result, the fall
population size was estimated at
over 60 birds, and their range now
encompasses parts of six
townships.
During the winter of 1993, an
additional eight birds were
relocated from thriving populations
on the Niagara Peninsula and in
Simcoe County. The labour for this
effort was provided by interested
volunteers and the Ministry of
Natural Resources. All of the
support costs for the operation were
generously provided by the Ontario
Federation of Anglers and Hunters,
from their Wild Turkey Trust Fund.
With reasonable nesting
conditions this spring, the
Wingham population could easily
expand to 150 birds by 1994 and
400 birds by 1995. If funds are

The Ministry of Agriculture and
Food has signed a new three-year
agreement with the Ontario 4-H
Council in support of the volunteer
youth organization's activities in
rural Ontario.
"This agreement reinforces our
strong commitment to work with
the Ontario 4-H Council toward the
personal development of rural
youth across the province,"
Minister Elmer Buchanan said in a
meeting with the council.
With the agreement, the ministry
of Agriculture and Food (OMAF)
continues to be a partner with the
Ontario 4-H Council and its local
associations in the delivery of 4-H
Programs. The programs offered to
rural youth include livestock and
- - - crop production, financial manage-
ment, food preparation, nutrition,
recreational activities and career
development.
The ministry assists local
associations through its field office
staff. In consultation with the
Council, OMAF also provides
resource materials, leadership
training and recognition awards.
Al Payne, Ontario 4-H Council
President said, "This agreement
will allow us to continue to provide
strong leadership to the Ontario
4-H Program." The council is the
representative body which develops
and implements provincial policies
and programs for 4-H groups.
Payne said there are 17,000
young people and 3,200 volunteers
active in the Ontario 4-H program.
