Almost there
Brussels Tiger player, Ken Higgins, just made it to third
before the tag Saturday night during a game against the
visiting Seaforth Bears. Brussels won the game.
Lengthy jump
His face contorted with effort, Hullett Central Public School
student Jason Harkes goes for length during the long jump
event at the school's annual track and field competition.
Jason ended up winning the event with a jump of 3.75
metres.
The Brussels Tigers improved
their record to 2-0-1 in Huron
County Fastball with a pair of wins
over the past week.
Monday night in Blyth a five-run
second inning helped the Tigers to
an 8-0 win over the Decor.
Brian TenPas and Doug Conley
were three for three at the plate
while Pete Exel hit safely in two at
bat.
Todd Uhrig, who had three
RBI's, pitched the win with relief
help from Conley.
Sunday night in Brussels Gary
Pipe's RBI triple plus a three run-
homer led the Tigers to a 103
mercy of the defending Huron
County Fastball Champion C4th
Bears.
Doug Shaw was three for three in
a game that saw the Tigers seventh,
eighth and ninth batters Mike
Watson, Kevin Kellington and
Shaw bat seven for nine while
scoring five runs.
Doug Conley went the distance
striking out six bears for the win.
The Tigers don't play their next
game until Sunday, May 30.
Hanover
Barons lose
finals to
Napanee
The Hanover Barons, who lost
only one of 45 games played to
reach the All-Ontario finals, lost
their final three games as the
Napanee Raiders rebounded from a
2-1 deficit to claim the Jr C
Championship.
Napanee, who along with the
Brussels Bulls were the only team
to defeat Hanover this season,
scored 17 goals in the final three
games exploiting the Barons'
biggest weakness — their
goaltending.
For Hanover, it was their third
trip to the finals in the last five
years. In 1989 they lost to Bradford
while in 1991 they won the All-
Ontario Championship defeating
Orangeville. The Barons have won
the Western Jr C title nine years in
a row, defeating Brussels in the
group finals for the last four years.
The weather's warming up and so
are the teams as ball and soccer
gets underway in the area.
We want to be able to give as fair
and complete coverage as possible,
but with so many teams we will
need help from coaches and par-
ents.
No special writing skills are
required. Score sheets for both
sports are available at the Blyth and
Brussels offices. You fill in the
lines and we'll fill in the blanks.
