Blyth students clean, build to improve area It's been a busy month for the students but their efforts have made this area a better place to live in. how beautiful it really was. They were very impressed with the hard work of Don McDonald, Howard Hackwell, Neil McGavin, Randy Banks and Jeff McGavin. It should also be noted that Patty Banks helped a lot with her advice and helpful comments. There is also no truth to the rumour that the minister's wife spends all her time skipping merrily up and down the beautiful new sidewalk. SCHOOL NEWS By Shaelyn Ward and Robbie McClure On Feb. 23, Mrs. Bennett's grade one and two class got mealworms from the pet store to learn about the stages of mealworms. First they were eggs, then they changed into larva or mealworms, then they changed into pupa and then they changed into beetles. Students coloured in the days on a graph. They learned that an adult beetle can easily lay 500 - 600 eggs each. By Anthony Bachert and Kris McNichol On Tuesday, May 11, Anthony Bachert brought in Buster, the mouse. Buster is only three centimetres long and his eyes are not open. Anthony had to feed it by hand. We fed him milk. We have two soccer teams called the Thundercats and the Bulls. The Thundercats beat the Bulls. It was a close game. It was tied the day before. Then the Thundercats scored the next day and won the game. Koch, Secretary On May 16, Ross and Margaret Bennett were greeters at Duffs United Church. The choir's selection was "Rejoice in God", taken from the songbook, 'An God's Children Sing.' Rev. Banks' time with the children was spent reviewing the books of the Old Testament. A lot of the enthusiasm was then put into singing the children's hymn "Just Like Salt." Graeme Craig read from the book of John, chapter 14: 15-21. Rev. Banks' sermon was called "How Religious You Are." " I disapprove of the way in which we use the word Religious," he said. " It seems to have become associated with being hypocritical and insincere. I would rather be described as 'faithful' than religious." He cited the Pharisees of Jesus' day as examp:es of those who were outwardly religious but inwardly insincere. Our many church build- ings do not mean that christ-like faithful lives are being lived throughout the community, he said. Having heard of the sidewalk put in outside the manse, quite a few people after church decided to see Ball season in full swing The ball season is in full swing in Walton. Read together tonight You could say Blyth Public School grade eight students have really "pitched in" lately. The environmentally conscious class has been busy cleaning, build- ing and rehabilitating to celebrate Earth Day and Pitch-In week. It began April 22 (Earth Day) when the class, along with other Blyth students, picked up garbage at Lions's Park, the ball parks and the arena. More recently, Grade eights con- structed bluebird houses and built and installed a boardwalk for the disabled at the Hullett Wildlife Marsh. Also, the class has joined other Blyth students in building wood duck nest boxes for Hullett. The funds for these projects came from education grants such as Learners in Action, Habitat 2000 and the Shell Environmental Fund. That's not all. In June, the class will be working with the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Blyth Optimist Club to rehabilitate the Blyth Brook from Hwy 4 to the arch. They are therefore planning an Achievement Program for May 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ethel United Church. The members were taught the counted cross stitch and lace knit darning which is an old craft being revived. Perhaps the members will be called upon to teach these crafts to mothers, aunts, grandmothers and neighbours or other interested people. By the boardwalk Toni Richmond and Kim Lee of Blyth Public School carry a railroad tie to waiting students at the Hullett Wildlife Centre where the Blyth Public School grade eight class is building a boardwalk to make the centre wheelchair accessible. The school received $1200 through a Shell Canada Environmental Grant to purchase the materials and the students donated the labour. Pastor reviews OT books
