Blyth area people will be able to
enjoy the familiar music of Frank
Mills as he makes his first appear-
ance ever at Memorial Hall this Fri-
day.
In a phone interview from his
Nassau home Mr. Mills said he is
looking forward to his visit to
Blyth. "What frequently seems to
happen when agents and managers
book these tours is that they scoot
through Toronto playing at a few
venues in the city, but don't often
take the time to visit the smaller
areas. I'm very much looking for-
ward to this opportunity."
After selling out the first show in
both Blyth and on the previous day
in Petrolia, a second show was
added. This, according to Mr. Mills
happens frequently, though he
admits that they often take a chance
on the §econd one. "We typically
sell out quickly but the second
show will always be a gamble," he
said.
Mr. Mills says his time is fairly
evenly divided between touring,
composing and recording and the
business aspect of his career. Last
year he performed 58 concerts.
He has just finished an as yet
untitled album due for release in
August. The album, which he
describes as having a "homey,
folky feeling ", was recorded in
Nassau where the Canadian per-
former has lived for 14 years.
A consistent entertainer well
known for such hits as 1972's
"Love Me, Love Me, Love", and
the Bells "Stay Awhile", recorded
the previous year, the song which
most typically springs to mind
when Mr. Mills name is heard is
"Music Box Dancer" one of the
best selling songs around the
world. Released in 1978 it went
gold in the U.S. and was a hit in 26
countries. Purchases of the sheet
music have reached more than two
million copies, second only to
"White Christmas".
Explaining that he had no idea
the song would be the success it
was he said, "You have to create a
product as part of the creative pro-
cess and you hope it will be a suc-
cess. If anyone had said "Music

Box Dancer" was going to be the
hit we all would have laughed."
A strike against it was the fact
that it was the 11th song on the
album. "The recording engineer did
not like it at all, so it was sort of
like, 'Well, let's do it and get it out
of the way.' It actually sat around
for five years before anything was
done with it."
The audiences at the shows in
Blyth can expect to hear a mix of
original and well-known contempo-
rary pieces, the familiar and the not
so familiar. Mr. Mills says he
enjoys live performances as it gives
him a chance to "test the waters. I
can re-affirm that what I'm doing is
correct. When you first go out with
that tour you don't know for sure
how it will turn out."
His success he attributes in part
to his longevity as a popular corn
poser and musician. "Just the fact
that I've been doing this so long it
falls together quite nicely."
There is one thing that is a cer-
tainty — audiences can expect to
hear "Music Box Dancer". "If I did-
n't I'm certain I'd be in serious trou-
ble," he chuckles.
