Outdoor spas, heating up the market
to provide leisure time products
that were imported from the United
States.
In 1975, the expanding business
was moved to a new retail store at
RR 1, Wingham. The store features
a show room where six to eight
spas are usually on display.

Decorative ceilings
a distinctive look
One of the best ways to
redecorate a room that's begun to
show its age is to start at the top.
A suspended ceiling consisting of
decorative panels in a variety of
new styles and colours can turn the
cliché of yesterday into the
statement of today.
Suspended ceilings come in
either 2x2-foot or 2x4-foot panels
that drop into a grid system. They
feature decorative designs in styles
ranging from subtle, overall
textures to scored and embossed
patterns.
According to Armstrong World
Industries, one of the country's
largest manufacturers of suspended
ceilings, homeowners in the past
often had to settle for white to
match the rest of the room's decor.
Now, these stylish ceilings come in
a variety of colours, including
neutral tan and delicate pastels of
peach, plum and rose.
Different grid treatments also can
serve to customize the look of a
room. Today's grid systems come
in the same pastel colours as the
ceiling panels, in metallic accents
colours, or in white, black or wood
grain.
A colour-matching grid creates a
handsome look that virtually hides
the suspension system. A dramatic
brass or mirror grid can be used to
add an element of high design that
draws attention to the ceiling.

consultant to Kmart.
Today's homemaker wants it all...
the home, the job, the family, the
garden. She's reworked the "super-
woman" ideal to fit her new life-
style. How can she,accomplish this?
She demands the same high
standards of the products and
furnishings that she puts in her
home — and of the retailers that sell
them — that she demands of herself.
She prizes convenience and time
savings and she will only buy what
she considers to be high quality and
high value.
are really heating up the market.
Michelle Kennedy, owner and store
manager of Rintoul's Pools and
Spas Ltd. of RR 1, Wingham.
"People put permanent hot tubs
on their deck and run them all year
round as opposed to a swimming
pool which is only used in the sum-
mer," says Ms Kennedy. The out-
door hot tubs are so popular, she
can't keep them in stock.
She believes the spas' ability to
relax people makes them so popu-
lar.
"They totally relax you and let
you get a good night sleep," she
says. ''They're also soothing for
people who suffer arthritis and give
them added mobility."
Water is a traditional source of
healing for aches and pains says a
pamphlet on spas. Sinking into a
pool of water brings physical and
mechanical freedom and warm
water provides physiological bene-
fits. The body enjoys ease of move-
ment, thanks to low specific gravity
and high buoyancy while the heat
relaxes muscles.
The leisure industry predicts that
spas will soon become as popular
as home videos.
However, spas are more expen-
sive than videos with a price range
of $2700 for a two-person spa to
$7500 for a 12-person unit.
People put them on the deck and
For those who cannot afford it,
spas can also be rented at Rintoul's
Pools and Spas, who deliver them
to your home for the weekend or
week.
Though spas are the in-thing,
Rintouls still sell many pools year-
ly. Above-ground types seem to be
the most popular, says Ms
Kennedy.
Swimming pools are available in-
round, on-ground or above-ground
and can be made of concrete, fibre-
glass, or prefabricated walls of steel
or aluminum with a vinyl liner.
Rintoul's advises planning before
purchasing a pool to make the most
of your backyard, your pool and the
time you will be spending there.
Things to consider include
municipal by-laws governing pools
such as set-back and fencing regu-
lations, where to place the pool
where it' will make the most of
available sunlight which keeps the
water warmer and if you want the
pool to adjoin to a deck or patio.
Rintoul's Pools and Spas has
been helping customers with these
decisions since 1970 when William
Rintoul started the business in the
family garage in the town of Wing-
ham. The goal of the business was
