PAGE 19. Home & Garden 1993 Tips for better lawns and gardens, naturally Talk of global environmental problems can leave the average person feeling helpless. But in fact, each of us can make a significant contribution to environmental well- being right in our own yards and gardens. Healthy lawns, trees, shrubs and other garden plants reduce air pollution, product oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide and halt soil erosion, while they beautify our surroundings. Simple, sensible gardening habits like composting, and the proper use of water and fertilizer can make a real difference. The job of healing and preserving our environment begins at home. Fertilizer use: How to minimize risk Misuse or overuse of fertilizers can cause water pollution when excesses run off into lakes and streams or leach through soil to Use rugs in high spill areas Continued from page 18 floors practically impervious to water. Surface finishes are blends of synthetic ingredients such as Polyurethane, "Swedish" finish, moisture-cure urethane and water- based urethane. Another choice is irradiated polymer or acrylic impregnated finishes which primarily are suited for commercial use in flooring for stores, restaurants or other high- traffic areas. For advice on the best care and maintenance of your hardwood kitchen floor, most experts recommend talking to your installer. It's always a good idea to use throw rugs in high spill areas near the sink and stove. In addition, "walk-off" mats just outside and inside the kitchen entrance help catch grit that is a floor's worst enemy. Floors that last a lifetime When Hardwood Floors magazine conducted an informal poll of veteran installers, they found that most of them reported a steady increase in the number of hardwood floors they are laying down in kitchens, entryways and eating nooks. One installer reported, "I was in business for 25 years before I did my first kitchen floor, and another 10 before I did the second. Now I do them almost every day." As one flooring expert put it, "A hardwood floor is a lifetime floor. You can restain it, sand it, restore it — but you never have to replace it." groundwater. This is not just a problem with commercial agriculture. In fact, homeowners are just as likely to misuse and over apply fertilizer. Water soluble plant foods eliminate much of the risk. Poured around the plant or applied directly to the leaves, the plant food is take up and used quickly and completely. Use water soluble fertilizer when plants are actively growing, and always at the recommended application rate. The importance of good soil All the fertilizer in the world won't help you grow healthy lawns and gardens if you have poor soil. The soil around many homes has either a heavy clay content or is very sandy. New homesites often have just an inch or two of topsoil spread over construction debris. You can improve any soil by incorporating generous amounts of organic matter like old manure, peat moss, or compost. Properly fed, vigorous lawns and gardens also help improve soil structure naturally by developing thick, fibrous root systems. As these die and are replaced by new roots, they add fiber and absorbency to the soil.
