Fertilizing lawns should be done in moderation
Continued from page 14
that you can plant and "almost for-
get about", said Mr. Hunking such
as peonies and astibile.
To battle weeds many people are
placing plastic and wood chips
down around shrubs to keep the
renegades from thriving. Mr.
Hunking recommends a landscape
fibre as the base with mulch placed
over that.
When it comes to fertilizing
lawns, Mr. Hunking recommends
moderation. Fertilizing lawns is
counterprodcutive, he says "You
add the fertilizer to make them
grow, then curse all summer
because you have to cut it. Do it in
moderation at the first of the year
to get it green and established. He
suggests a fertilizer that is 10 per
cent nitrogen, six percent phospho-
rus and four percent potash. "Then
fertilize again in summer to get
through the heat and drought using
7-7-7," he said.
When planting annuals use a fer-
tilizer high in phosphorus as it pro-
motes root growth, says Mr.
Hunking. If using water soluble fer-
tilizer it should be done after plant-
ing.
For established perennials, Mr.
Hunking suggests fertilizing in the
spring after the beds are cleaned.
Once the plants begin to grow,
work in a basic fertilizer such as a
7-7-7, or peat moss or composte.
The latter can be used on lawns as
well by sprinkling over then raking
in. Another option is decomposed
manure.
In most cases, if shrubs are in
good top soil they do not require
fertilizer, unless displaying signs of
poor growth or discolouration of
leaves or needles. "Any plant with
good top soil usually doesn't
require anything," he said.
When deciding how to plant,
there are a few ideas which may
help. "Try and go for a flow in
heights from the outside edge
inwards, "said Mr. Hunking.
As for colour that can be left
more or less up to personal taste,
though there are some common
sense suggestions such as not plant-
ing red flowers against a red wall.
Mr. Hunking's personal
favourites are fibrous begonias.
"They are easy to grow, contrary to
what is said they will do well in
sun or shade and they don't requires
a lot of water. Also they have a sea-
son long bloom and come in a van-
ety of flower and leaf colour."
Mr. Hunking says the best way
for people to learn the how to's of
gardening is through reading, "I am
always pushing books because you
can never have enough knowledge.
Gardening is not an exact science.
Plants will not always do what
they're supposed to do. "
Mr. Hunking also suggests that
trial and error can be the one of the
best ways to learn some tips on gar-
dening.
Finally, it's important to realize
that the product is not going to
come easily. "Spring may be a
beautiful time of year, but there's
an awful lot of work involved in
it," said Mr. Hunking.
In-home gyms,
popular
If driving 10-15 miles to your
health club to wait another 20-30
minutes to use your favourite piece
of workout equipment is an all-too-
familiar scenario, you may want to
consider making fitness equipment
a permanent part of your home's
decor.
"Exercising at home is
convenience," says Rod Dishman,
associate professor of physical
education at the University of
Georgia. "You don't waste time or
travel too far. Also, some people
don't have confidence in their
physical appearance or their
physical abilities," he adds. "When
you couple a new behaviour with a
new environment, such as a health
spa, it represents a double threat to
people, so they prefer to stay at
home."
"With fitness club membership
fees skyrocketing and time
becoming such a scarce resource,
it's no wonder people are deciding
to exercise at home," says Jim
Bostic, president and CEO of
NordicTrack. "With in-home
fitness equipment, you can work
out when you want, and at a price
you can afford."
