Home & Garden 1993 Local gardener shares tips for spring By Bonnie Gropp When the colours of summer bloom surrounding you in fra- grance and beauty, it's often easy to take for granted. But aesthetically pleasing iandscaping doesn't just happen; it takes knowledge, time and nurturing along with a bit of common sense. Local gardener Robert Hunking of RR1, Auburn designed the mem- orable gardens at the Bayfield Lit- tle Inn, which have been a favourite site for weddings, and annually tends to the grounds at Memorial Hall. In 1982, Mr. Hunking left the GLEN SAWS RR 75 32C3I34-13to1n Bus. 432-9292 Home heart regarding a chosen occupa- tion and since leaving school in 1985 has divided his time between landscape work and farming. Also, for the past two years he has worked with the Te-em Farm Greenhouse Garden Centre opera- tion in Bayfield. Though Mr. Hunking does con- sultations and rough plans his pri- mary business is lawn and garden maintenance. He prefers natural looks saying, "I like to keep things simple." When designing gardens, Mr. Hunking stresses the importance of getting the plant that fits. "Don't try and make the plant fit; find one suited to the spot you have for it." For example, he says, people will often be so enchanted by the beauty of a Colorado Blue Spruce that they don't stop to think its potential height of 60 feet does not make it an appropriate plant for a bed close to the house. Placing an upright evergreen under a window is anoth- er "no-no", said Mr. Hunking. To decide whether to plant annu als or perennials takes some con- sideration as well. "People may disagree with me when I say this but if you don't want year round SUPER SPECIAL 7 foot Crimson King Maple 15.00 MAITLAND MANOR NURSERY (Just east of Bluevale Hwy. 86) 887-3240 work then annuals are the way to go," says Mr. Hunking, adding that this type of garden does get costly.
