Attendants at the April 17, 1943 nuptials were Jean Taylor and Greig Hamilton. The bride, a daughter of Walter and Lulu Upper and the groom, son of Francis and Rachel Duncan were married by Rev. A. H. Davis. After a honeymoon trip to Nia- gara Falls and points north the cou- ple resided in Welland for a time then farmed in Morris Township before moving to Brussels. Mr. Duncan also served in the army and worked as a steel worker. Brussels girl national 4-H club delegate "My Place, My Chance, My Future", the inspirational message of the 13th Annual National 4-H Careers Conference held in Winnipeg Manitoba, March 31 to April 4, instilled in its participants a sense of optimism and empowerment as they began to prepare themselves for the future, looking beyond high school to post secondary education and potential careers. Sixteen national 4-H delegates, including Amy Terpstra from Brussels and 32 senior Manitoba 4- H members participated in the four day conference which is designed to provide the knowledge and guidance that will allow 4-H youth to make practical and well- informed career choices. Canadian 4-H Council President Brian Little believes that "in today's increasingly competitive and changing job market, our youth require every piece of knowledge and every opportunity we can provide." "National 4-H Careers conference is a unique forum" said Mr. Little "where rural youth can learn about the various career opportunities available to them, especially those in Canada's agricultural sector." 1993 delegates participated in the traditional career counselling seminars, industry tours and simulated job interviews. Through a "Running your own Business" workshop they also learned how to create their own employment opportunities, and at the opposite end of the spectrum, delegates were involved in a panel discussion on International Work Opportunities. Approximately 20 Winnipeg-area businesses and organizations were involved in the conference program, providing participants with the opportunity to visit such facilities as MacDon Industries, the Royal Bank of Canada and an Agriculture Canada Research Institute. This year's delegates also had the pleasure of hearing from Keynote Speaker, Dr. Tim Ball of the University of Winnipeg. Evening sessions provided light- hearted entertainment: a Murder Mystery, "Western Night at the 4-H Corral" and to end the week on the right note, the annual closing Beach Bash. The success of any 4-H event is largely due to the generous financial assistance provided by its sponsors. Numerous companies and provincial sponsors support Careers Conference in the hopes of collectively helping to develop tomorrow's leaders, thereby ensur- ing a viable future for Canada's agriculture industry and its rural communities. Canadian 4-H Council sponsors providing major support for the 1993 conference included: Prairie Pools Inc., Investors Group, National Trust, the Co-operators Group Limited and Air Canada. retired in 1975.
