By Bonnie Gropp
It's not easy to fill the shoes of a
legend, but Vancouver's Arts Club
Theatre's touring production of A
Closer Walk with Patsy Cline
which appeared Sunday evening in
Blyth, managed to bring her spirit
to life for the many people in the
audience who remembered the
magic of her voice.
Set at radio station WKLM,
Winchester, Virginia in 1963 with
flashbacks to the Grand Ole Opry,
Las Vegas and Carnegie Hall, Pat-
sy's story is told through the disc
jockey, but more importantly
through her memorable music.
Such classics as "Sweet Dreams",
"I Fall to Pieces" and "Crazy"
brought appreciative applause, not
just for their familiarity, but for the
authenticity brought to them by
singer Colette Wise. Though Ms
Wise will never walk in Patsy
Cline's shoes, she is worthy of
walking next to her. She possesses
excellent vocal range, which is as
rich in the lower register as it soars
in the higher. She meets the chal-
lenge of emulating the unique
weeping vocal trademark of Patsy
Cline admirably. When she sang
the first chord of "Sweet Dreams" it
was so eerily like Cline there was
at least one audible gasp in the
audience.
Mark Weatherley became a
favourite with his spots as DJ Little
Big Man, as well as providing
some of the lighter moments with
portrayals of emcees at the Grand
Ole Opry and Las Vegas.
Mr. Weatherley also assisted the
band members, Jaye Drebs, piano
and musical director; Lee Oliphant,
bass, Phil Robertson, drums and
Gord Matthews, guitar, with the
commercials which brought back

some fun memories.
Written and directed by B.C.
born Dean Regan, A Closer Walk
moves smoothly from beginning to
end. Though the story is not partic-
ularly imaginative, the poignant
final scene is dramatically simple,
yet powerful.
Also worthy of mention are the
colourful set design by Ted Roberts
and costumes by Pearl Bellesen.
A Closer Walk, which is the last
offering in the Blyth Festival's
1992-93 Festival of Entertainment
Series, will be presented at Grand
Bend's Huron Country Playhouse
from July 6-31.
For country and western buffs or
for anyone familiar with the songs
of Patsy Cline, who died in March
of 1963 in a plane crash, A Closer
Walk is a bit of nostalgia which
brings you closer to the legend for
a time.
The creator of 'Music Box
Dancer, Frank Mills, will be per-
forming at the Blyth Festival May
6.
The name of this Montreal-born
composer and pianist is indelibly
linked with the famous song which
went gold in the United States and
was a hit in 26 countries. Today,
sheet music for the song still sells
well with sales over the two million
mark.
His popularity is international. In
1980, after touring Japan, he was
named the country's International
Artist of the Year.
Mr. Mill's career began after
studying music at McGill Universi-
ty when he became the pianist for
The Bells (who had hits such as
Stay Awhile and Fly Little White
Dove). He then went solo, record-
ing for Polydor. Following Music
Box Dancer, he continued to score
hits with albums such as Poet and 1
in 1980 and Frank Mills, A Special
Christmas in 1983.
He is currently working on his
ninth album which will combine
new age synthesizer and his earlier
symphonic recordings.
