At a ceremony to unveil a model of the new building, Pat Hayes, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture and Food and MPP for Essex-Kent announced that pre-qualification of contractors to build the new head office of the Ministry of Agricul- ture and Food will begin next week. "We expect to have the bids evaluated and the contract awarded in the spring so that construction can begin in May," Mr. Hayes said. Guelph MPP Derek Fletcher said he was pleased local job creation would receive a boost. "This new jobsOntarioCapital project means an early start to local job creation, and represents the equivalent of one year's construction work for more than 1,800 people," he said. "Today's announcement sends the strongest possible signal that the government is fulfilling its pledge to bring economic renewal to the regions through the relocation program, and that we intend to get the shovels in the ground as soon as possible," said Brian Charlton, chair of Manage- ment Board. Under the Ontario Government Relocation Program, 450 provincial government jobs are being transferred to Guelph as part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food's relocation of its head office from Toronto to the Stone Road and Gordon Street site in Guelph. The office complex will also house 460 OMAF workers now located in six leased locations in Guelph. OMAF will also relocate 160 positions from Toronto to Chatham, when the provincial crop insurance corporation, Agri-Corp, moves its offices to Chatham. Construction of a new building to house Agri-Corp will be tendered in March. "This is just one example of the active role in community development that the new Ontario Realty Corporation will play," said Mr. Charlton. "Among other duties, it will co-ordinate the relocation Brussels Council briefs Motion to start meetings later defeated Brussels council voted at its April 5 meeting, to continued to meet at 7 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m. which had been suggested by Councillor Hastings. The councillor has to be at Grey Township meet- ings as road superintendent and can't be at the beginning of the Brussels meetings during the sum- mer months. But councillors agreed that Councillor Hastings could be late for the meetings, missing most- ly routine business at the beginning of the meeting. "In the summer I want to have it at seven and get it over," Reeve Workman said. *** Councillors agreed to look into other alternatives to treating Queen St. in the west end of town rather than the paving requested in a letter from Herb Stretton. The letter had asked when council might be ready to pave the street. But Councillor Wilson, head of the road committee was worried about the condition of the soil under the present road. While it would be expensive to pave the street, he said, it would be a lot more expensive if the road had to be dug up to make a proper base. He worried about the width of the road as well. Reeve Workman said that with only two houses on the street it was likely to be low on the priority list compared to other, more populated streets. Councillor Wilson wondered about tar and chip or some other treatment for the street since the traffic load isn't so heavy. The mat- ter will be explored further. Councillor Stretton declared con- flict of interest on the subject. ABC CANADA THE FOUNDATION TO PROMOTE LITERACY IN CANADA. Distribution of this message was made possible by the Canadian Advertising Foundation program and ensure that we deliver on our commitment to have these buildings up and occupied, and the promised provincial jobs moved to these communities." Earlier this week, Premier Bob Rae announced the creation of the Ontario Realty Corporation to control the province's inventory of buildings and land holdings, develop and market surplus government real estate, and eventually finance, hold and manage all buildings related to government operations. In total, jobsOntarioCapital will create more than 11,000 person- years of work during the construction period from now to late 1996.
