On April 3, 1918, the first
provincial teachers' organization,
the Federation of Women Teachers'
Associations of Ontario, was
formed to address the professional
interests of women teachers.
Today, the Federation represents
42,000 elementary women teachers
in public schools across Ontario
and deals with a wide range of
education, social and equity issues.
Currently, a major focus has been
anti-violence work. A three-year
"No to Violence!" campaign is in
place across the province, aimed at
galvanizing community groups into
action to reduce the increasing
level of violence in the media, in
homes and in schools. Over 35
communities have participated so
far, with many more in the
planning stages.
The Huron Women Teachers'
Association works locally for its
280+ members in the area of
professional development, teacher-
board relations and services to
members. The association has
grown from a small group of
women coming together to break
the isolation of teaching in rural
Huron County to the present-day
association of professional women
ranging in experience from first-
year teacher French teacher to
classroom teachers with more than
30 years of teaching experience.
The Huron WTA remains strong in
the belief that women teachers are
best represented by other women
who teach because of their love for
children and of learning. That much
hasn't changed in this era of radical
reform in education.
In honour of the Seventy-fifth
Anniversary of FWTAO, the spring
banquet anniversary party in Huron
County will be held on Wednesday,
June 2 at 6 p.m. at the Stanley
Township Complex in Varna.
Members, invited guests and retired
teachers will come together to
celebrate 75 years of growth and
support from the Federation of
Women Teachers' Associations of
Ontario.
All retired teachers living in
Huron County (as well as retired
from the Huron Board but no
longer living in Huron County) are
invited to attend the Spring
Banquet/Anniversary Party and to
join in the celebrations with active
members and invited guests. Cost
for the dinner is $10 with a cash
bar. To be honoured this year in
light of their planned retirement are
