Byrne, Grand Master of Ontario when they dedicated their new lodge rooms at the corner of Dins- ley and Queen Streets on Saturday afternoon. The rooms, above the Blyth municipal offices, were rebuilt last year after the old lodge rooms, across Dinsley Street, were required for the expansion of the Blyth Festival rehearsal space. Fol- lowing the dedication, a reception was held for Mr. Byrne at the Blyth and district Community Centre, hosted by John Elliott, District Deputy to the Grand Master for the North Huron district. Nearly 250 representatives from lodges from all over Ontario attended the din- ner. • Mr. Byrne explained that the dedication ceremony used at the Blyth Lodge earlier that afternoon dates from 1893 and involves inspection of the lodge by senior officers and anointment of the lodge with corn, representing plen- ty, wine, representing gladness and oil, representing comfort. Masonry, he said, is not just ritu- als and meetings but shows mem- bers how to live a better life. A Mason, he said, is a caring person, "a man whose heart is expanded by benevolence". Under Masonry, he said, all men in the world are broth- ers. If all the world practiced Masonic teachings the world would be a better place, he said. During the meeting certificates of appreciation were presented to those who had helped make the new lodge possible including the Village of Blyth, Blyth Centre for the Arts, Wingham Memorials, and Masons Jim Walsh, Ted East, Jim Howson and Rick Elliott who had directed the renovations. A special presentation of a 50- year Past Master's Jewel was made to Gordon Elliott by Mr. Byrne. Marketing topic of meeting Marketing is very much common sense, panel members at a meeting on marketing your business told Brussels business people attending a dinner meeting in the village Wednesday night. Dave and Judie Glen, of Glen Farms in Ethel, and David Peacock, director of marketing of the Blyth Festival, spoke at a dinner orga- nized for local business by The Cit- izen. They will speak tonight (Wednesday) at a similar meeting at the Blyth Inn. "Marketing is 50 per cent science and 50 per cent intuition," Mr. Pea- cock said. The Glens said that while there is a mystique about market research, for them it meant talking to the staff in specialty stores where their jams and herb vinegars were selling to see what customers wanted, and to learn what reaction was to their products. The Glens have built a full-time business out of manufacturing home-made food products aimed at people looking for something a lit- tle different. "During a recession, small-ticket items that make you feel good do well," Judie Glen noted. The Glens also discussed their efforts to keep staff in the stores that carry their product informed about what they sell through newsletters and recipe books. They want people to feel they know them and their family personally, they said. People are getting tired of the facelessness of big corporation, they said. When they start selling to a new store they make sure that staff members have a sample of their product to taste for themselves so they'll know more about what they are recommending to customers.
