Home taught
pupils costly,
says Mathers
Huron County has over 70 pupils
who are educated at home by their
parents, Education Committee
trustees learned at a March 8 meet-
ing.
Arnold Mathers, the Superinten-
dent of Program said Board of Edu-
cation staff are required to spend
extensive amounts of time and
resources to monitor these home
schoolers. Though the board isn't
required to supply any books,
resources are shared with the home
schoolers.

HCBE received 18 applications
for the position of Director of Edu-
cation. Two were unqualified. They
were reviewed by the executive
committee who agreed to a list of
seven candidates for interviews to
be held April 24. Committee mem-
bers decided on the order of inter-
views by a lottery process.
The committee learned the prac-
tice of other boards is to pay the
travel expenses of director candi-
dates on the interview date where
expenses are submitted. This infor-
mation was brought to the board
which passed a motion stating the
HCBE would reimburse reasonable
travel expenses of interviewed can-
didates for the position of director
of education.

The management committee will
be conducting a review of planning
needs at F.E. Madill Secondary
School in Wingham to permit
longer term improvements and new
uses to portions of the technologi-
cal studies wing.

A parent, Judith Anne Douglas,
wrote a letter to the board on behalf
of 42 parents expressing concern
about the kindergarten size at How-
ick Central School. Total enroll-
ment is 51 with 25 pupils in one
class and 26 in the other.
Though the board has a policy to
split kindergarten class sizes in the
number is over 25 before January,
such was not the case in Howick.
However, Mrs. Douglas said par-
ents are concerned about time spent
dressing and undressing children
for recess, lack of personal atten-
tion and inadequate class space.
She did stress the teacher is doing
her best.
The board reviewed the letter but
made no decision on it. One trustee
suggested the school look into par-
ent volunteers.
Grey council
accepts tender
Grey Township council held its
regular meeting on April 5 and
accepted the tender of Pollard
Highway Products for 380 flake
imperial tons of calcium chloride at -
$109.95 per ton. The Pollard tender
was the lowest of two received.
Council noted that the price of
calcium chloride has dropped from
$222.97 per ton in 1991 to
$109.95/ton in 1993.
Council authorized grants of
$500 to the Grey Central School for
repairs to the tennis courts, $300 to
the ARK (Brussels youth drop in
centre) and $100 to the Wingham
and District Community Living
Association.
